Erin Kellison’s Top 10 Top 10 Torches and Pitchforks! A good ol’ fashioned witch-hunt/angry mob

Soul Kissed, book two in my Shadow series, released this week. Magic is seeping back into the world, bringing with it the monsters and legends of antiquity. But it’s also awakening the magic that threads through some families’ bloodlines. As regular people are shutting themselves in their homes, whispering that it’s the end of the world, mage Houses are rising up. This is the start of the modern Dark Age.

One of the themes I had some fun with while writing Soul Kissed was the witch-hunt, which builds over the course of the story and is part of the climax. It begins with one woman screaming “Witch!” early on in the book.

Since I had so much fun writing mine, here, in no particular order, are some of my favorite classic (and not-so-classic) witch-hunts/angry mobs.

The Miracle Whip Commercial

Seems like Miracle Whip is so tasty it can only be the work of the devil.

Phineas and Ferb (a Kellison family fave)

The mob is early for their appointment with Doofenshmirtz, so they are waiting in the parlor.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

Kill the beast! The mob has their own song. Can’t beat that.

Frankenstein (1931)

The Classic mob.

Nosferatu (1922)

Another classic, this one silent.

Le Vamp (game)

My kids love to play it. I have an angry mob on my phone almost every day.

Shrek (another Kellison family fave)

He’s not afraid. He sneaks up behind them and says, “This is the part where you run away.”

Edward Scissorhands

Have to include Tim Burton whenever I can!

The Simpsons

The Simpsons made the angry mob into an event I’d love to attend. (Did you know there’s also a Zombie Run? It’s a real thing!)

Dark Shadows

Another Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration. Not as good as the old TV show, but still good, campy fun.

Erin Kellison is the award-winning author of the Shadow series, the Shadow Touch novella series, and the Shadow Kissed series, all of which share the same world, where dark fantasy meets modern fairy tale. RT calls her latest, Soul Kissed, “a dark fairy tale with a twist, perfect for readers who love passion with their fantasy.”

The one that always gives me the chills is Shirley Jackson’s short story, The Lottery.

  2. Make Kay

These are some great mob scenes! The Simpsons fun run is the best 🙂

  3. Rhonda Beyer

I’d have to say my favorite mob scene is from Hotel Transilvania. I love that movie…..

  4. Anne

The ones that come to mind for me are all in old b/w Frankenstein pictures I used to watch on tv after school. I don’t recall the names.

  5. Dovile

My favorite is the one from one of the Simpsons’ Halloween specials, where Lisa and Marge are witches.

  6. [email protected] GREAT read

Oh I definitely like the Beauty and the Beast one, only because it’s one of my fave Disney movies! I also like the one from Robin Hood Men in Tights, in the beginning. It wasn’t necessarily an angry mob, but the townspeople did get together in front of their burning village and yelled at Mel Brooks for burning down their village!

The Shrek ones were good too! Loved Shrek!

  7. Lori Ha

I’m a fan of Beauty and the Beast, the Disney version, so will go with that one.
    Thanks :0)

  8. erinf1

thanks for the fun list! I’d also have to say the Shrek mob… so fun 🙂

  9. Amber

They weren’t carrying torches but I think there was a pitchfork…but The Holy Grail by Monty Python has a great scene about burning a witch. Great Mob interaction! Extremely funny!

    Thanks for the great post!

  10. Lori Parker

Also, my witch-hunting fan-fest runs towards fiction. Rachel Morgan has this problem repeatedly in Kim Harrison’s Hollows novels (My favorite is the one at the bridge with Nick).

  11. Chelsea B.

In The Mummy, where they all just pretend to be a part of it. Oh! And Warm Bodies, where Julie’s trying to act like a zombie 😉

  12. Ana Death Duarte

My favorite mob scenes are those in the book “Little Brother”, by Cory Doctorow!

Thanks so much for the giveaway and the chance to win =]

  13. Cynthia Blain

I thought that the Shrek movie that I saw with my grandchildren had a great angry mob scene.

  14. Linda Townsend

Beauty & The Beast has my fav mob scene :-))) Thanks for the giveaway!

  15. Mary Preston

That is a great mob scene in Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST & as you pointed out they sing to get their point across.

  16. Sebella Blue

One of my favorite movies, Van Helsing, those Romanians really know how to mob.

  17. Krista

I love the mob song from Beauty and the Beast. It’s one of my all time favorite Disney songs!

  18. Rachelle

“Beauty and the Beast” has my favorite fairy tale heroine. And the mob song is great too!

  19. Vero

Beauty and the beast and edwards scissorheads, they are my favorites movies when i was kid

  20. Denise Z

I am going to have to go with Frankenstein or perhaps The Scarlett Letter 🙂 Thank you for sharing and making me smile.

  21. Lisa

The opening of Van Helsing is one of mine – but I’m always a sucker for Vampire stories (pun intended)

  22. Chris bails

I loved the mob scene from Phineas & Ferb. Love watching that show with my kids. Also the Mircle Whip commercial is very funny.

  23. Filia Oktarina

The Mummy!! I love it, even i watch again adn again this movie 🙂

  24. Stephanie Ann

definitely the one in beauty&the beast! one of my favorite movies!

  25. Angela Fitzgeraldi

I thought I left a response but I didn’t. I choose Dark Shadows. I also want to pick something else. I think Van Helsing has a couple of times in the movie where people gather and chant wanting death..

  26. Angela Fitzgerald

The last name is spelled wrong. It shouldn’t have the I at the end of Fitzgerald. The way I just spelled it is right.

  27. latisha depoortere

My favorite is Beauty and the Beast. Thank you for the great giveaway!
