Tara Fuller’s Cash, Easton, & Anaya on The Afterlife (Inbetween, Heaven, & Hell) from BLURRED
Cash: Shadow Walker
Easton: Reaper for Hell
Anaya: Reaper for Heaven
“Hello and welcome to your Afterlife. My name is Cash and I’ll be your guide.” He winks and nods to the large set of pewter gates.
“Their guide?” Easton approaches, his black cloak stirring with a slight breeze. “Give me a break. You wouldn’t know your ass from your elbow without Anaya.”
Cash smirks. “Oh really? Then lead the way reaper boy. I’d love to get your take on crazy town.”
Easton rolls his eyes and walks towards the gates, motioning for you to follow. He whispers something to a hooded guard and the gates slide open. A thick gray fog rolls around your ankles and dark figures that resemble people move along the horizon.
“Welcome to the Inbetween,” Easton says. “You end up here if you’re soul is too young or is straddling a moral crossroads when you die. Once you pass through those gates, there are only a hand full of way to get back out. Some prove themselves and get a chance to be reborn. Those that don’t rot. Lose their last lingering bit of humanity and turn into shadow demons.”
Cash groans beside him. “Jesus, man. You are one hell of a buzz kill you know that?”
Easton scowls and the ground above him starts to boil. A black oil like substance starts to spin around his ankles like cyclone and screams erupt from the depths below. Cash narrows his gaze on the pit and Easton raises a brow.
“What? You’re not up for a little trip downtown?”
Cash swallows. “Been there. Done that. Not looking to go back, but you have fun with that, East.”
A smile curls Easton’s lips and he nods. “That’s what I thought. Do me a favor and tell your girl friend to get ready to take over. No way am I venturing into angel territory.”
Cash waves as he walks away. “Will do!”
Easton closes his eyes and gives into the pull below him. When the screams fade and the cold turns to an unbearable heat he opens his eyes. “And welcome to the underworld. If you look to your right, you’ll find Umbria. The Shadow Land. Unless you want to end up a midnight snack for one of those hungry little bastards, I’d stay close.”
Beyond the giant skull lines cliffs, fire falls like rain and shadow like creatures dip in and out of the frothy waves screaming their madness into the night. Easton turns you around and your feet shift and slide over the heated rocks beneath you. Easton points to a set of flaming gates. A line of souls are marching between them and screams float through the air like a nightmare song.
“That would be the entrance to Hell,” he says. “If you happen to find yourself there, you are shit out of luck. Do not pass go. Do not collect two hundred dollars.”
Behind you a warm light blooms across the barron ground and Easton smiles. “Ah, Anaya. You found us.”
She folds her arms across her white sundress. “You know how much I hate coming down here.”
“And you know how much I hate going up there,” he says, nodding to the sky.
Anaya laughs. “Fine. You win. I’ll take them. Follow me.”
Anaya waves her hand and a light erupts out of thin air, rippling like a puddle of liquid pearls. She steps through into a perfect warmth, and pulls you along too. When you arrive on the other side she holds her hand out into the air and closes her eyes. The white mist around you clings to her fingertips like puppet strings, just waiting for her to tell it where to go. A small smile lifts her lips as she smooths her hand through the air like she was wiping a window clean. The fog part, clouds scattering at her command. A pair of enormous gold gates the color of Anaya’s eyes glow against the ice-blue sky. Three big lavender-tinged moons bob around a collection of bright-white clouds. A lulling hum vibrates through the air, sounding far away.
“Beyond those gates is Heaven,” she says. “And let’s hope for your sake, that you’ll call it home.”
Tara Fuller writes novels. Some about grim reapers. Some about witches. All of course are delightfully full of teen angst and kissing. Tara grew up in a one stop light town in Oklahoma where once upon a time she stayed up with a flash light reading RL Stine novels and only dreamed of becoming a writer. She has a slight obsession with music and a shameless addiction for zombie fiction, Mystery Science Theater, and black and white mochas. Tara no longer lives in a one stop light town. Now she lives with her family in a slightly larger town in North Carolina where they have at least three stoplights.

Cash is haunted by things. Hungry, hollow things. They only leave him alone when Heaven’s beautiful reaper, Anaya, is around. Cash has always been good with girls, but Anaya isn’t like the others. She’s dead. And with his deteriorating health, Cash might soon be as well.
Anaya never breaks the rules, but the night of the fire, she recognized part of Cash’s soul—and doomed him to something worse than death. Cash’s soul now resides in an expired body, making him a shadow walker, a rare, coveted being that can walk between worlds. A being creatures of the underworld would do anything to get their hands on.
The lines between life and death are blurring, and Anaya and Cash find themselves falling helplessly over the edge. Trapped in a world where the living don’t belong, can Cash make it out alive?
