Cover Art Coverage

Wicked Little Pixie’s tagline is “We Snark Because We Care”, which is just about the perfect philosophy for Cover Art Coverage.  Along with our guest commentator Natasha, Abigail and Kate dish the good, the bad, and the Photoshopped to all hell.  After thinking he died in a bug trap, I was beyond excited to see Morpheus show up on A. G. Howard’s new cover.  What’s your favorite this week?

Now the Lynburns are back, and Rob Lynburn is gathering sorcerers so that the town can return to the old ways.

But Rob and his followers aren’t the only sorcerers in town. A decision must be made: pay the blood sacrifice, or fight. For Kami, this means more than just choosing between good and evil. With her link to Jared Lynburn severed, she’s now free to love anyone she chooses. But who should that be?

“I hope you guys all like the covers! Here they are displayed together in all their glory.” – Sarah Rees Brennan

Abigail Says

Even though this is a little too reminicent of ENTHRALLED and it’s a mid series style shift, I think it’s a smart call. The original style was very young looking (I assumed it was MG or even a Children’s book. This is clearly YA and conveys the Gothic tone nicely.

Kate Says

To be honest, I really liked the first cover in the series (and I am glad they redesigned it to match this one) but this cover is great too, and it seems to encapsulate the book better.

Natasha Says

I love the darkness of the covers, even though a ton of YA books look like these ones.

DOON…

Veronica doesn’t think she’s going crazy. But why can’t anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes? When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months.

But the Scottish countryside holds other plans.

Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna’s great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica’s daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they’ve longed for…or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.

DOON is loosely based on the premise of the musical Brigadoon, with permission from the ALan Jay Lerner Estate and the Frederick Loewe Foundation. Follow the journey at http://www.DoonSeries.com

Abigail Says

I almost thought this was a movie poster as first. Vivid colors and and a nice nod to the plot. Beautiful.

Kate Says

This is very pretty, very otherworldly, and really portrays the fairy tale feel it seems like they’re going for based on the blurb.

Natasha Says

I don’t know what it is about this cover but whatever it is, I don’t like it.

Abigail Says

I’m always drawn to the color green, and it pops here. Plus her emotional longing comes accross perfectly.

Kate Says

I like the title font and that it stands out against the background, but it also looks like the back of her head is missing and that weirds me out.

Natasha Says

It’s okay, doesn’t shout buy me but doesn’t shout ECK either.

National bestselling author Barb Hendee presents a dark, fascinating new series set in the world of the Noble Dead Saga… the story of two sisters who will discover they have far more power than they ever envisioned…

In a small village in the nation of Droevinka, orphaned sisters Céline and Amelie Fawe scrape out a living selling herbal medicines in their apothecary shop. Céline earns additional money by posing as a seer and pretending to read people’s futures.

But they exist in a land of great noble houses, all vying for power, and when the sisters refuse the orders of a warlord prince, they must flee and are forced to depend on the warlord prince’s brother, Anton, for a temporary haven.

A series of bizarre deaths of pretty young girls are plaguing the village surrounding Prince Anton’s castle. He offers Céline and Amelie permanent protection if they can use their “skills” to find the killer.

With little choice, the sisters enter a world unknown to them — of fine gowns and banquets and advances from powerful men. Their survival depends on catching a murderer who appears to walk through walls and vanish without a trace — and the danger around them seems to grow with each passing night.

Beautiful candelight glow everywhere. I wish I knew who the artist was. Lovely.

This cover made me want to read the blurb, and man do I like a girl with a sword.

Natasha Says

It’s very female Star Wars.

Yep, the arm threw me at first too, but also this looks very mature for a YA series. I assumed it was an adult series at first.

Kate Says

Totally agree with Natasha on the arm thing. Kinda weird. A lot of this cover wasn’t particularly clear at first.

Natasha Says

The arm around the stomach? I had to enlarge the image because I had NO idea that was an arm at first glance. It throws the porportions way off. And I hate head chopped covers.

Abigail Says

Really cool and distinct font treatment again. The bright, neon colors really work. I do miss the wolf, but this is still a solid followup.

Kate Says

Love the colors and the font, but it reminds me of other book covers that use a similar font and it is kind of blah otherwise.

Natasha Says

I like how it pops but it tells me nothing about the book.

Abigail Says

This is just creepy to me. I loved the whimisical quality of the debut and I love Nathália Suellen aka Lady Symphonia (who I believe did this cover again), but he’s a little too male figure skater to me.

Kate Says

Definitely screams Alice in Wonderland, even more than the first in the series. I could tell without even reading the line on the top.

Natasha Says

Even though it’s very Mad Hatter, I love it.

Allie Munroe has only ever wanted to belong, maybe even be well liked. But even though she’s nice and smart and has a couple of friends, she’s still pretty much the invisible girl at school. So when the chance to work with her friends and some of the popular kids on an English project comes up, Allie jumps at the chance to be noticed. And her plan would have worked out just fine…if they hadn’t been sucked into a magical realm through a dusty old book of fairy tales in the middle of the library. Now, Allie and her classmates are stuck in Nerissette, a world where karma rules and your social status is determined by what you deserve. Which makes a misfit like Allie the Crown Princess, and her archrival the scullery maid. And the only way out is for Allie to rally and lead the people of Nerissette against the evil forces that threaten their very existence.

Abigail Says

My favorite of the three, mostly because she looks a little bemused by that sword.

Kate Says

Girl with a sword part two! And dragons in the background! Love it.

Natasha Says

Another one of those books that have an okay cover but it tells me nothing.

Trapped in the deadly land of Nerissette, Allie has all but given up on any return to the mortal realm. Unless she can find the two elusive artifacts that have the power to get her and her friends back home. But she’s got even bigger problems as the newly crowned queen of Nerissette: she must unite her people in the midst of a civil war and capture the Fate Maker—the evil puppet master responsible for the conflict—before he can find another army willing to return him to power. On top of it all, Allie is just a normal teenager. Her feelings are growing for the guy she’s certain is her true love, and balancing her personal life while being the queen isn’t as easy as it sounds. Allie must learn the true meaning of bravery, love, and kinship, regardless of the world—and danger—around her.

Abigail Says

I always appreciate continuity in a series, but this one looks very photoshopped compared at the other two.

Kate Says

Wow, though the first one looks a bit photoshopped (which I can overloook) this one looks totally fake and there is no redeeming sword or dragon, or to be honest must interesting detail at all.

Natasha Says

IMO I kinda think this cover is cheesy, the models pose just makes me giggle and the expression on her face, I don’t know if its come hither or what.

But all isn’t really fair in love and war. Unrest is quickly forming at the borders and soon Allie realizes that the Fate Maker wasn’t the only one who wanted her crown. When her trusted aunt Bavasama sends her troops into Nerissette on a campaign of murder and mass destruction, Allie has a tough decision to make. She can’t take the chance of letting more people die or letting those she’s lost disappear from memory, but there is more at stake than even she knows. Still, Allie has to do something. And in the process she’ll discover what she’s truly made of when faced with a series of options…each more horrible than the last.

Abigail Says

Much better integration of the model, but the whole look is so similiar in all three that it feels boring by book three.

Kate Says

Slightly better, but still a bit boring, and the obvious modern clothing with sword combo is kind of jarring.

Natasha Says

This cover is very blah to me, doesn’t do anything at all to make me want to read the book.

Abigail Says

Is this yet another model for Cat? It’s not my favorite from the series, and the colors are a tad bright, but I knew immediately it was a Cat and Bones cover and the steback is pretty sexy (click the cover to see it).

Kate Says

Okay so maybe this isn’t the absolute best cover ever, but NEW CAT AND BONES. YES. And I am sad about the cover model switch but these things happen. Also, the colors on the inside…a bit strange looking that their right arms are pink and their left arms are grey….

Natasha Says

Really, at this point I notice all Frosts books look the same.

I think I might be in the minority in that I loved the original cover of Unspoken. The re-design for the series is fine, but it doesn’t really pop out and grab me.

The cover of Doon is gorgeous. The more I look at it the more I love it and want to fall into the book/world.

Mist Torn Witches I really liked when I first saw it, but the more I look at it the less it works for me. Something seems off in it, and I’m not sure I can pinpoint what it is.

I LOVE the cover for Unhinged. I kind of want to hang that on my wall.

The cover model for Up From the Grave looks really, really young for Cat to me, but I like the layout of the cover. And the step-back. This series does get some great designs (even if the execution doesn’t always work for me).

  2. Patricia

Meeeh.. I wish they could re-do all the Cat and Bones covers for a new edition with the same cover-models, tbh. I never liked the original cover-style as it is, so even if they had a different model on each cover, I might still like those more than the ones we’ve got right now. ._.’ (Though I do love that it’s easy to recognize titles from the series, no matter how unnecessary that might be at times.)
