Cover Art Coverage

A pretty cover is its own reward, but I get a special thrill when the cover is gorgeous and manages to capture elements of the plot.  Shaunta Grimes’s VIRAL NATION manages to be dramatic, evoke the setting, and introduce a girl and her dog that I can’t wait to meet.  That’s just one of things that makes Cover Art Coverage such a fun feature to pull together, and I’m not alone in enjoying oogling and commenting on covers.  We’re in the final three for the BBTC’s Best Feature Award, click below to cast your vote!

John Charming isn’t your average Prince…

He comes from a line of Charmings — an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chainmail and crossbows to kevlar and shotguns, he was one of the best. That is– until he became the abomination the Knights were sworn to hunt.

That was a lifetime ago. Now, he tends bar under an assumed name in rural Virginia and leads a peaceful, quiet life. One that shouldn’t change just because a vampire and a blonde walked into his bar… Right?

Abigail Says

I’m loving the juxtaposition of the classic fairy tale style lettering with the gritty leather clad guy

Julia Says

The image quality isn’t the greatest, but I like the concept.  The title says fantasy, the leather jacket and sword says urban, and the Templar cross on his t-shirt adds a cool “secret organization” vibe.  Too bad the cover model himself looks like he was stolen off a cheesy 70’s pulp cover.

Kate Says

This cover made me put this book on my wishlist without even reading the blurb. Love it! Especially the lettering, like Abigail said.

When one of their own ties the knot with a dominatrix (no pun intended), The Impalers—a vampire rock band—are ready to party down. But trouble awaits them once again when they wake up…

Attending their bandmate Saxon’s wedding seemed simple enough for Johnny Malone and Drake Hanover. But after waking up in a dominatrix’s dungeon, they realize their cash and cell phones have been stolen—along with the bride’s wedding dress and the groom. And then there’s the matter of the two women in the room…

Loose cannon Johnny is handcuffed to Lizette, an uptight paper pusher. She wants to help save Johnny from the horrible fate in store for him at the hands of the Vampire Alliance, but he won’t sign the paperwork. Then there’s Josie, the waifish caterer from the reception, who rescues Drake from a sex swing. Josie may be cute and make a great cupcake, but Drake knows she might also be the thief. Or it could have been that gang of drag queens all dressed as Cher…

Regardless, Johnny and Lizette need to get out of these handcuffs. Drake and Josie need to find their missing belongings. And Saxon needs to be located before the Vampire Alliance comes down on them hard.

Abigail Says

Tez (from Tez Says) told me he looked like he was face palming and that totally killed the potential sexy factor for me

Julia Says

A little gritty, a little dirty, and perfect for a “Fangover”. I like how the cover model’s stubble has grown in from book one.

Kate Says

With the bottle in his hand, he kind of looks like he’s holding his head in an “oh shit I shouldn’t have had so much to drink last night” motion.

“A powerful witch might live a long time, but a single well-placed bullet could change that. While my preferred weapon was magic, I was not averse to shooting anyone or anything offering my sister or me harm.”

Ex-soldier and earth witch Nyx Ianira is working as a PI in San Francisco when she sees the last thing she ever wants to see: the Sisters of Justice—the mysterious earth witch police force. A Triad of Sisters usually means an execution mission, but the Sisters’ only goal is to capture and escort Nyx across the country.

Nyx is badly needed back in Twitch Crossing, Georgia, the place she ran away from ten years ago to escape the stiff rules and duties of being a true witch. She wanted a life of her own. Now she’s being dragged back to her swampy hometown because another life is in danger: Her little sister is missing, and Nyx is the only one who can track her down in Duivel, Missouri.

Abigail Says

The green and orange colors are great, plus she looks sexy while still being practical. Nice.

Julia Says

She looks pretty pissed off, I wouldn’t mess with her.  I love the crumbling wall framing the fire, colorful and pretty.

Kate Says

The fire coming from her hands is cool- she looks so bad ass. And ditto about the colors- love them!

Inspired by the childhood classic Alice in Wonderland, this harrowing and romantic story features teen zombie slayer Alice Bell who has lost so much—family, friends, her home. After a strange new zombie attack, Alice fears she may be losing her mind as well. A terrible darkness blooms inside her, urging her to do wicked things. The whispers of the dead assault her ears and mirrors seem to come frighteningly to life. She’s never needed her team of zombie slayers more—including her boyfriend, Cole—than she does now. But as Cole strangely withdraws and the zombies gain new strength, Ali knows one false step may doom them all.

” I won’t tell you how I danced around the house when I found out the publisher had decided to go in that very direction (you’re welcome). I love the big dress, the shattered glass (make sure you check out the creepiness of the girl’s image!), the checkered floor, the dark air of mystery…I could go on. To me, this cover is just so much fun, with a treasure waiting to be discovered in every corner.” – Gena Showalter

Abigail Says

Great evolution from the debut! That electric blue is so vivid and I love all the Alice nods. She really has shed that vulnerable feel from the debut and embraced a coy confindence. Curious indeed :)

Julia Says

Holy cow, this series cover art went battballs crazy in a hurry.  The cover for book one was intriguing and creepy, but this looks an acid trip and a three ring circus had V. C. Andrews’s baby.

Kate Says

I like that if you look closely, she is holding a different pose in the broken mirror than in front, and I really like the pop of color from the blue dress.

A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and
superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will.

Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

Abigail Says

I feel like I’m going to be in the minority here, but this does nothing for me. The blah colors and image are dull.

Julia Says

Anyone else thinking Cruella deVille in space?  I like the drama of this image.  I’m not really sure what it’s trying to sell, but I can’t stop studying it.

Kate Says

Sorry, Abigail, I think this one is really great! It’s kinda retro, and fun.

When Dante is given his first mission as a liberator to save the soul of seventeen-year-old Aspen, he knows he’s got this. But Aspen reminds him of the rebellious life he used to live and is making it difficult to resist sinful temptations. Though Dante is committed to living clean for his girlfriend Charlie, this dude’s been a playboy for far too long…and old demons die hard.

With Charlie becoming the girl she was never able to be pre-makeover and Aspen showing him how delicious it feels to embrace his inner beast, Dante will have to go somewhere he never thought he’d return to in order to accomplish the impossible: save the girl he’s been assigned to, and keep the girl he loves.

Abigail Says

It took me a minute to figure out what was missing here and it’s the background. On the debut, the stripes made him really standout. Here, even though I still like this and the blue color is great, the background blends too much with him.

Julia Says

I like the accent colors, but without the background focus, the dark t-shirt on the dark background just sort of blurs together.

Kate Says

It’s okay, not spectacular. I like the blue instead of the red but like Abigail said, the background is kind of blah.

Abigail Says

Hard to beat a man in a trench coat, but his face looks a little plastic.

Julia Says

I’m not a huge fan of how back-lit and shadowed the cover model is, but the glossy, metallic color is a good match for this fantastical series.

Kate Says

The words all kind of blend together and the title gets lost under the author name, especially with the way the colors are.

Sierra Fox’s relationship with sexy werewolf Jason Papan is going great, but it doesn’t take a psychic to tell her someone’s out to get her. As usual, though, there’s too much else going on to worry about just another assassination attempt.

In addition to the demon-possessed freaks that still want her, a whole new bucket of trouble has been dumped in her path. The half-sister Sierra never knew she had isn’t a typical teenager. Willow comes with supernatural baggage that grows heavier every time someone close to her dies. And the load gets bigger every time the police find the body of another young girl.

Now Sierra’s not only dealing with the target on her own back, but the one that a power-hungry woman has painted on her poltergeist-magnet sister. As she finds herself drawn into the thick of a murder investigation, Sierra must face her deepest fears and embrace the darkest of her powers to overcome the looming threat. Or the prediction of her death might just come true.

Product Warnings
Spook catching: never gets any easier, neither does trying to avoid being killed by a shadowy organization. Always expect the unexpected—dangerous vampires, poltergeists and demon-obsessed freaks. At least the werewolf is pleasurably safe.

Abigail Says

Some of my favorite covers from Samhain. Really well done, and the way she’d peeaking around the knife blade is really alluring.

Julia Says

Wow, *super* creepy, I love how the blade focuses the eye on her face.  She looks young, though, and a little like Emma Watson.

Kate Says

This really creeps me out. That knife is giant.

Here’s a trench coat done right. I’m right on the edge of middle though only because this is so similiar to the Mindspace Investigation series
covers. But the dragons are awesome.

Julia Says

Gorgeous lighting, and I’m getting a very “Constantine” vibe.

Kate Says

Ooooo I like this. The blue to red variegation is really cool, and it looks like an old school photograph, which I think is relaly cool.

Abigail Says

Really cool title detail. I don’t love color washes on PNR covers, but this one isn’t half bad.

Julia Says

The title is neat, but I really can’t stand the red wash over his skin.  Kate has it nailed with the “sunburn” line.

Kate Says

That sunburn looks really painful. But I do like the design next to the title.

I do like the tiny snake detail on the mask, but these covers feel really detached from the books for me.

I really like the bright red lips and nails, and the detail underneath with the flowers.

The force of nature that is Chuck Wendig returns with an original urban fantasy novel, creating a brand new series for Abaddon Books.Five years ago, it all went wrong for Cason Cole. He lost his wife and son, lost everything, and was bound into service to a man who chews up human lives and spits them out, a predator who holds nothing dear and respects no law. Now, as the man he both loves and hates lies dying at his feet, the sounds of the explosion still ringing in his ears, Cason is finally free. The gods and goddesses are real. A polytheistic pantheon—a tangle of divine hierarchies—once kept the world at an arm’s length, warring with one another for mankind’s belief and devotion. It was a grim and bloody balance, but a balance just the same. When one god triumphed, driving all other gods out of Heaven, it was back to the bad old days: cults and sycophants, and the terrible retribution the gods visit on those who spite them. None of which is going to stop Cason from getting back what’s his…

The wall behind him is alive! Click the cover to see it enlarged. He looks kind of busted (and not in a good way), but everything else is so wicked and cool looking.

Julia Says

The pen and ink Chuck Wendig covers had in the past mixed equal parts mystery, threat, and a hint of the grotesque.  This cover is one note: horror (but that probably matches this book).

Kate Says

What happened to the upper half of his face? This cover grosses me out.

Well this hurts. Love the series, but these covers are not great and this is the worst yet. That purple and yellow is painful, and he looks like a boy band reject. Still want to read it though.

Julia Says

I love this series, but this cover is not doing it for me.  The cover model is floating over the background color, and his skin-tone and eyes don’t pick up anything from the purple (pretty though it is).

Kate Says

I really think it’s the bracelet that kills it for me. ;) He looks so soft and fuzzy, and the color combo is awful.

After a virus claimed nearly the entire global population, the world changed. The United States splintered into fifty walled cities where the surviving citizens clustered to start over. The Company, which ended the plague by bringing a life-saving vaccine back from the future, controls everything. They ration the scant food and supplies through a lottery system, mandate daily doses of virus suppressant, and even monitor future timelines to stop crimes before they can be committed.

Brilliant but autistic, sixteen-year-old Clover Donovan has always dreamed of studying at the Waverly-Stead Academy. Her brother and caretaker, West, has done everything in his power to make her dream a reality. But Clover’s refusal to part with her beloved service dog denies her entry into the school. Instead, she is drafted into the Time Mariners, a team of Company operatives who travel through time to gather news about the future.

When one of Clover’s missions reveals that West’s life is in danger, the Donovans are shattered. To change West’s fate, they’ll have to take on the mysterious Company. But as its secrets are revealed, they realize that the Company’s rule may not be as benevolent as it seems. In saving her brother, Clover will face a more powerful force than she ever imagined… and will team up with a band of fellow misfits and outsiders to incite a revolution that will change their destinies forever.

“It’s so beautiful. I actually teared up a little looking at it. It has a great Reno skyline, and the art department got Clover and Mango just right.” – Shaunta Grimes

Abigail Says

This is one of my favorite post-apocalytic covers ever. From the dog to her red sneakers and hoodie…I would have teared up if I was the author too. So awesome.

Julia Says

A girl and her dog, a decimated landscape and a hint of tech in the title, this cover does a fabulous job presenting a lot of plot elements in a gorgeous, eye-catching way.
