Amanda Carlson is joining us today on her blog tour for FULL BLOODED (published on September 1, 2012 from Orbit), the first book in the Jessica McClain urban fantasy series. In her review, Abigail said it, “follows in the celebrated footsteps of Patricia Briggs’ Alpha and Omega series and Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series with its comprehensive werewolf mythology, well paced action, and promising romance.”
ATUF: Your protagonist, Jessica McClain, is the world’s only female werewolf. How important was it to create a mythology that makes female werewolves almost impossible?
AC: It wasn’t a conscious decision, it was more like this character flung herself into my mind mid-shift and she had a story to tell. Once she was done shifting I knew her name, her personality and that she was totally unique. When I sat at my computer, the rest came organically. I’m a pantser not a plotter, so the story literally unfolded as I wrote. Jessica managed to surprise me a lot and that’s what I love most about writing.
AC: The Cain Myth was a tangible way to create fear in the Pack. My wolves are superstitious in the extreme and they dislike change. Jessica was an infant, so she couldn’t defend herself. It was the perfect way to generate unrest throughout her life. In HOT BLOODED there are clues to what’s going on early on in the story (and was the Myth true or manipulated). Then it’s up to Jessica to process what she finds along the way.
ATUF: The ending of FULL BLOODED qualifies you for ‘evil author’ status due to its tantalizing cliffhanger. Can you take pity on your readers and give us a hint of what’s to come?
AC: LOL! There wasn’t a perfect stopping point because Jessica is beginning her adventure. As far as cliffhangers go, I felt it was on a very small scale. I view the entire series as the story arc, with Jessica in constant motion. Romance gives you a nice wrap up at the end, but for urban fantasy I feel there’s a heartbeat. I want to follow that heartbeat to the end. In HOT BLOODED Jessica is on a journey to find her man, defeat her nemesis and figure out who and what she is. Along the way she encounters lot of mythological mayhem. It was a blast to write. Creating and writing magic is so much fun.
ATUF: If FULL BLOODED were ever made into a movie, who would your dream or, to keep things interesting, nightmare cast be?
ATUF: What other projects can we look forwarding to reading from you soon?
AC: HOT BLOODED releases April 2013. I’m working on COLD BLOODED right now and loving it! COLD releases fall of 2013. I’m hoping there will be news of future installments late fall, early winter. I’m also working on some other projects that I’m very excited about. It’s just about managing my time at the moment. Cloning myself would be ideal.
ATUF: What are some of your favorite titles/authors in the paranormal genres?
AC: I love Faith Hunter and Karen Chance. They are two of my absolute favorites. My editor sent out early review copies and I was lucky enough to have them both read! It was a true squee moment when they both wrote back and said they enjoyed it. I couldn’t believe it. When you sit in your office with your head down and write a book, things like that never seem possible.
ATUF: Finish this statement with as much/little detail as you like: You’ll like FULL BLOODED if you like…
AC: Kickass action and adventure with a little snark on the side!
Thanks so much for hosting me today! If any of the readers today decide to try the series, I truly hope you enjoy it.
ATUF: Thanks so much for stopping by Amanda. Come back anytime!
