I feel like I’m part of the problem when I call out Missy Jane’s TRUSTING AN ANGEL cover for not airbrushing out all the real skin on the cover model’s back, but not enough to change my comment. Are there ever times when too much “realism” ruins a cover for you? If you’re a blogger interested in joining in on the commenting fun, fill out our Guest Commentator form here! Several times this post I found myself using the word “retro” as if it were pejorative, but upon further reflection I really meant “dated” or “tired”. I love a good retro cover, something classic and clean that evokes a specific era, but something about the homages to the pulpy covers of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s don’t make me nostalgic, they turn me off. Harlequin’s Nocturne series in particular suffers from this when I’m evaluating new covers. I see the style they were going for, they’re doing it “well”, I just don’t like it. What type of covers fall… Read more »
Today’s guest commentator, Sharon of I Smell Sheep, was treated to a wealth of Photoshop mis-matches, eye-popping colors, and stock images gone awry. Amidst all of these negatives, however, there were a few gems. Marie Brennan’s THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS promises more gorgeous illustrations to match it’s predecessor, and the border on Ruth Warburton’s WITCH FINDER is worth a few minutes of careful attention all on it’s own. Let us know which covers caught your eye (and which just plain burned them). If you’re a blogger interested in joining in on the commenting fun, fill out our Guest Commentator form… Read more »
There is no other way to say it- I inhaled this book. OBSESSION hit all my romance novel buttons, with the uber-alpha male, feisty female counterpart and loads of moments so sexy that I blushed. OBSESSION was one of those books where my inner feminist feels like she should be objecting to something, but then she gets a bit distracted by all the action and romance. In the end Serena brings Hunter to his knees anyways, so what if he’s a little bossy on the way?
Bare chests, optical illusions, and gritty, grimy sex appeal, this week’s cover reveals have it all. And between Abigail, Chris, and our guest commentator Kat from the Cuddlebuggery Book Blog, we pretty much covered all the bases as well. Kat’s a hard sell on covers, but that makes for some hilarious comments in the meantime. And I have a few follow up questions regarding Chris’s “adult beverages”, not the least of which being if we should include pairing recommendations with our cover reviews? E. L. Tettensor’s DARKWALKER just begs for a gin and tonic salute to the foggy streets of London, and… Read more »
Wanton Thoughts & Wicked Scribes also stay on top of new cover releases with their Cover Lover feature, which makes it a special pleasure to have Kaleigha from Wicked Scribes as our guest commentator this week. Bare chests, partially-decapitated cover models, and bad-ass Urban Fantasy heroines that fairly leap off the page, enjoy this week’s offering of new covers!
