BITCH PLANET is a thought-provoking and important series, but it can also be a difficult one to read. Kelly Sue DeConnick has the ability to turn a spotlight on a harsh truth and inspect it. BITCH PLANET: TRIPLE FEATURE VOLUME 1 introduces us to different artists and writers, each with their own spin on DeConnick’s universe.

When I pick up a new dystopian novel, I’m always hopeful that the author will put a new spin on the genre. But at it’s core, SINLESS is nothing new. Tarkoff has found a different, problematic way to divide society, but the same beats exist. The hero is at first blind to the horrors of her world, then her eyes open, and she decides to revolt and become the savior everyone apparently needs.
THE FOREVER SHIP is an unflinching portrayal of revolution. War is more than fighting. It’s starvation, waiting, and unwinnable situations. For every victory in THE FOREVER SHIP there is an equal devastating loss.
Motherhood is complex. Your body changes, your identity changes. THE END WE START FROM takes these overwhelming changes and throws in an apocalyptic event for good measure. The story starts as the unnamed narrator, with her husband and friends, prepares for a water birth. In the first few pages the prose is purple, drenched in metaphor rather than conveying the narrator’s frame of mind. It’s not until the narrator gives birth and goes to her in-laws that the story really starts.
THE CITYBORN is fueled by its dystopian society. In a place only known as ‘The City’, there are clear lines between the rich and the poor. There can so much intrigue to a class-ruled dystopia. It’s always fun learn about how these strange societies are built ,and it’s even better to watch them fall. Unfortunately, the City was a cipher for too much of the book.
I feel like COMPANY TOWN snuck up on me; at first I was reading a pretty good dystopian-type novel, and then BAM, it turned into a fabulous, terrifyingly too-close-for-comfort near scifi with interesting new concepts and amazingly real characters.
I really enjoyed Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series, and I loved her Bloodlines series, so I was eager to try SOUNDLESS and see what she could do in a different world. However, I wasn’t pulled into SOUNDLESS in the same way I was the Vampire Academy universe.
So I’m a bit biased, as I tend to love books with robots and artificial intelligence, but THE SCORPION RULES was spectacular. Full of intrigue, plot twists, drama and robots, it felt intense from beginning to end, keeping me on the edge of my seat as I breathlessly rushed to finish it.
I was quickly pulled into THE VEIL when Chloe Neill described the large box mounted cameras that would be triggered by magic use. The cameras carefully watching for anyone using magic or with magical abilities on most street corners instantly created a strong post-apocalyptic feel to the paranormal world that really peaked my interest.
Looking back at my review of THE QUEEN OF THE TEARLING, I was surprised that I had any reservations, because I only remember how much I thoroughly enjoyed the book. When I received a copy of THE INVASION OF THE TEARLING, it is pretty safe to say that I was ecstatic, so eager to follow Kelsea’s story and find out what happened to her.
