SHADOW BORN is a really fun read, with an awesome female protagonist. Brooke Chandler is a character that I could read about all day. She’s intelligent, no nonsense, kick-butt, highly independent, and an amazing detective. Then she gets placed into this awesome urban fantasy police procedural, which after reading SHADOW BORN and NIGHTSHADES, is fast becoming my favorite niche in urban fantasy.

As a life long lover of science fiction and fantasy I’ve always searched for a great story that could combine the two genres. I’ve read/attempted to read many, many books that had magic in space, but none of them have been worth mentioning until I stumbled across SALVAGE TROUBLE on Audible a couple of weeks ago, and since then the Black Ocean series has been the only thing I’ve listened to as I quickly devoured the seven books that are up on Audible right now.
I’ve been looking forward to BOUNDARY BORN since I finished BOUNDARY LINES last year. And BOUNDARY BORN was easily worth the wait. The Boundary Magic series has gotten significantly better with each book, and BOUNDARY BORN has continued that tradition by bringing us another epic adventure.
Marie Brennan has created a literary banquet in the Lady Trent series, with IN THE LABYRINTH OF DRAKES as the piece de resistance. A delicate blend of science, romance, and adventure, this is a book readers will sigh, smile, and clasp to their chests when they’re done.
Dark, original and awesome, GRIM TIDINGS is a strong follow-up to Kittredge’s BLACK DOG. With less of the elements that I don’t like and more suspense and drama, GRIM TIDINGS is an excellent second book in the Hellhound Chronicles.
MARKED IN FLESH was not exactly what I expected, but it was everything I didn’t know I wanted. I cannot recommend this series enough, and I cannot over-emphasize how wonderful all the books are. This is definitely one where it is worth it to start at the beginning. As book four in The Others series, MARKED IN FLESH rewards readers of the series with storylines and little vignettes here and there that may not mean as much if you haven’t read earlier books.
I didn’t know I needed a fabulous Egyptian-inspired zombie killing novel in my life, but now that I have devoured THE REBURIALISTS, I will be recommending it to everyone at the top of my lungs. It’s equal parts clever and exciting, with a dash of horror and a fun love story.
The world is complicated enough without having to cut the tendons of your dead relatives and get their mouths sewn shut in case a Re-Animus decides to take it for a ride after you bury it. You’re better off cremating it, if you can afford it. Where zombies rising is common place, the BSI (Bureau of Special Investigations) takes care of putting the dead back where they belong, and Brynner Carson is their hero.
Oh SPI Files, how do I love you? Let me count the ways! You’ve got action to keep me occupied, sexual tension for me to swoon about, snappy dialogue to keep me laughing out loud and a cast of characters I can’t help but love. THE BRIMSTONE DECEPTION is no exception to the rule, and for me, is a perfect urban fantasy read.
Breezy is many things. She could be described variously as a teenager, undead, biracial, bisexual… And yet, she is most strongly and ferociously herself.
THE ASSASSINS OF ALTIS starts right where THE HIDDEN MASTERS OF MARANDUR left off, and the action, romance, and political intrigue of the previous books continues superbly in this one. My number one fear for THE ASSASSINS OF ALTIS was that the plot would start to stall. I’ve seen this happen with a lot of books like this, but Jack Campbell clearly has the whole Pillars of Reality series thoroughly plotted out, because I never felt it stall.
