Action layered upon politics upon history, COLD REIGN is a procedural that doesn’t slow down. Long time fans will enjoy Jane’s ever developing relationships and magic, but even those new to the series will find lots to enjoy in this installment.

I’m not certain why I picked up FIRST YEAR. I pick up YA books a lot less often these days, and even less so if they’re about kids going to school. I’m glad I made an exception for The Black Mage series though because it is amazing.
Note: This book is available online for free. Read it now!
I read this book so quickly, I could barely believe it. The main character’s drive consumed me the way the zombies in the book consume the living.
Tim Kempfer if not a warrior. He’s a librarian on a very simple mission: kill the zombie that murdered his wife and son, and if needed, end them as well. How does he know which zombie he needs to kill in a post-apocalyptic, quarantined Seattle? Easy: his wife’s death was on the news, and it was so graphic and iconic of the disaster that the broadcasts have been playing it on a loop.
This gorgeous illustrated novel is one of the scarier things I have read. Nearly a collection of short stories, the tale is told by three strangers around the table of an inn. It’s a story about war, plague, human weakness and vampires.
These vampires are original and disgusting. The translation of the horrors of the Great War as literal monsters is very effective.
I love how this series unravels the overarching plot along with new details about Gin’s past ever so slowly across the books. SNARED is no different.
THE UNYIELDING is a fun romp through both the Norse underworld and the modern world, with a good dose of mischief and sexy romance. The characters are fun, the monsters are properly horrific and the stakes are high enough to matter. Although Ragnarok is no laughing matter, THE UNYIELDING makes it fun.
GAUNTLET is all about seeking a balance — in life and in virtual reality. After exposing the corruption within the Virtual Gaming League, Kali Ling has a placed a target on her back. It turns out that owning a team is expensive, demanding, and a lot more responsibility than expected.
If I am the first person to recommend NIMONA to you, drop whatever you’re doing and check out the three first chapters, available as an excerpt. If you don’t fall in love with Nimona and Lord Ballister Blackheart, there is possibly something terribly wrong with you – or your sense of humour.
This book drew me in from about ten feet away on the shelf. The whole thing is beautiful and feels old in your hand. The story of Johannes Cabal’s fight with the devil takes place in a demonic fair ground, where he is charged with stealing away 100 people’s souls in a year in order to exchange it for his own (which he carelessly sold to the devil a few years back – he figured a scientist wouldn’t need it!).
MAGIC FOR NOTHING took me a little bit longer to get into than other InCryptid novels. I’m not sure if it’s because of the new narrator – the youngest of the Price siblings, Antimony – or if it was because so much of the beginning relied on the backlash of the previous book. Once we got into the swing of things though – trapeze joke! – I really enjoyed it.
