Catnip for process nerds and urban fantasy fans alike, riding along with Nell Ingram on any given day is a treat.
GAUNTLET is all about seeking a balance — in life and in virtual reality. After exposing the corruption within the Virtual Gaming League, Kali Ling has a placed a target on her back. It turns out that owning a team is expensive, demanding, and a lot more responsibility than expected.
While I have some small quibbles, THE GHOUL VENDETTA was exactly what I expected from Shearin and The SPI Files. Fun, dramatic, witty and an all around good read, THE GHOUL VENDETTA continues the series in a great way, answering some questions while opening new avenues for the story to go down.
Have you ever read a book and wanted to immediately start it over again or find a way to get the next book even though it isn’t completed yet and your T.A.R.D.I.S. is always broken? That happens to me every time I finish one of the books in the Kate Daniels series. Such is the disappointment of traveling through time in a linear fashion.
FIRE TOUCHED is another brilliantly magical book in the Mercy Thompson series. Typically I’d start to complain by the 9th book in a series that all of this has happened before and (mostly likely) will all happen again. With this series there really is little if no repetition of plot points that I can remember happening. Some new danger is always around the corner for Mercy to battle.
Classic sword and sorcery, but by no means a simple story, BLOODFORGED explores the intricacies of politics, war, and marrying your ex-boyfriend’s brother. In this universe “victory” is more nuanced than defeating a single villain or weakness, forcing Alix and company to face heartbreakingly real obstacles as they fight for the alliances and resources that can turn the tide of a losing war. And upon this stage of high adventure and higher stakes, Lindsay’s characters sparkle with wit, emotion, and relationships that ring true.
WISH BOUND is a spectacular installment in the Grimm Agency series. While I can’t tell if this is the last book, or if the series is going to continue, WISH BOUND takes the plot line that has grown through the previous books and finishes it out with a bang. With characters we’ve come to know and love, it’s offers a wonderful sense of closure and offers answers to many of the questions that have come up throughout the series.
While Urban Fantasy often offers the emotion and character growth of Romance, the best surprises lie on the other side of the happily ever after. Through the looking glass of this familiar trope we see beloved characters moving to the burbs, dealing with bossy neighbors, and killing deadly creatures to be home in time for dinner.
REDZONE came off as really confused as to what genre it wanted to be. For the longest time it felt like I was reading a police procedural and a one that was at times confusing and slow. There were some hints about mutants and a disease being passed around in world. These mutants are put in redzones for everyone’s protection. When Cassandra does eventually go to a redzone it felt like a massive detour from the Bonebreaker serial killer plot of the police procedural section.
THE DIAMOND CONSPIRACY is full of steampunk awesomeness as I thought this whole series would be just from reading the story summary of PHOENIX RISING. It has everything from weird steampunk weapons and tricked out vehicles to intense action and some romance thrown in as well. Add a mad scientist doing creepy experiments and secrets upon secrets and this book is filled with so much delicious ideas.
