I will read nearly any story set in Chicago. This has led to great discoveries, such as the Chicagoland Vampires series. Unfortunately, THE FAIRYTALE CHICAGO OF FRANCESCA FINNEGAN was not one of the great discoveries.
Genre: Urban Fantasy
MAGIC FOR NOTHING took me a little bit longer to get into than other InCryptid novels. I’m not sure if it’s because of the new narrator – the youngest of the Price siblings, Antimony – or if it was because so much of the beginning relied on the backlash of the previous book. Once we got into the swing of things though – trapeze joke! – I really enjoyed it.
The Others is one of my favorite urban fantasy series. I love The Others so much because it is almost a purely character driven story. There is still a great over arching plot to the whole series, but what keeps me turning the pages are the characters. ETCHED IN BONE continues that tradition and develops the characters even more than before.
LOST SOUL takes a different approach than mosts Urban Fantasy P.I. novels, and because of that I found it a refreshing change of pace in the genre. The majority of P.I. novels in our genre follow a wizard or if not a wizard some other supernatural. Harbinger is just a vanilla human who’s been trained to investigate and take down the supernatural, all he has is his wits, his assistant, and a few magic items.
HISSES & HONEY finds the fun that was so vital to the first novel. After the getting her divorce and besting Theseus on live TV, Alena has taken a large step forward for supernaturals. Human’s respect her, even treat her like a celebrity. But even then, Alena just can’t win. She gets her bakery but loses her man.
At this point I’m pretty sure that John Ringo asked himself at the beginning of each Monster Hunter Memoirs book what was something cool that he could add to the Monster Hunter universe that Larry Corriea hadn’t done. With GRUNGE John Ringo answered the question, what would happen if a monster hunter could talk to monsters? In SINNERS, John Ringo takes on what would happen if everyone knew about monsters?
DARK MOON WOLF was a pretty unique premise from the typical wolf shifter urban fantasy/paranormal romance story. The love interest is not there, and there is already the HEA baby that happens at the end of many of these stories.
When you mix incredibly powerful witches and hot djinns who are tied to their lamps for hundreds of years, you get the incredibly sexy RISING FOR AUTUMN, which surprised me in a few different ways: for such a short book, it had big action, big characters, and an even bigger story.
MIDNIGHT CURSE is the first in the Disrupted Magic series, but is actually the 10th novel written in the Old World Chronology series by Melissa F. Olson. I didn’t realise it was part of a larger series until after I had finished it, and I didn’t feel like I missed anything by not reading the previous books.
THE TURN takes Hollows fans back to where it all began, a world where witches, vampires, and all sorts of magic are hidden away behind the sexism, racism, and revolution of the 60’s.
