BLACK BIRD OF THE GALLOWS fits in a lot of YA paranormal romance cliches while somehow also managing to be very unique and totally creepy. The creative mythology really gives a lot of oomph to what could be a very flat and boring YA paranormal romance.
ASHES REBORN is a brilliant urban fantasy story with unique characters and a plot filled with action, suspense, and intrigue. The mythology of phoenixes is complex and refreshing in a genre filled with vampires, witches, and werewolves.
WOLF HUNT is high on suspense and action with a wonderfully steamy romance which makes it yet another excellent installment of this series. I’m a fan of suspense, so I was pretty okay with the romance taking a back seat to the cool, intense, and dangerous plot revolving around werewolf mythology.
In an attempt to diversify my paranormal romance reading materials I picked up HIS COMMAND because I hadn’t read anything about genies recently and I was drawn to the absurdly purple-pink cover. Was it going to be wondrously cheesy?
SEAL WOLF UNDERCOVER is a good read with witty banter between two strong shifters and a plot that evolves into something bigger than you think it will be when starting the story. The rhythm of the plot is pretty steady and moves in a typical way you’d expect from a book in the Heart of the Wolf series.
URBAN ENEMIES is a pretty fun romp into the twisted minds of the bad guys from various urban fantasy series. There were of course some characters who I had no clue about. Luckily each story starts off with a general summary of the series the character(s) appear in so there was some idea of what was going on.
RIDE THE STORM picks up right after the events of the previous book, REAP THE WIND and in typical Cassandra Palmer series tradition, we hit the ground running. The beginning of this book is non-stop action, things exploding, and Cassie remarkably not getting too maimed in the process.
While I enjoyed STRANGE PRACTICE overall, I couldn’t help feel a little duped. The series carries Greta’s name but she’s one of six POV characters. It was a disappointing realization because Greta was my hook into STRANGE PRACTICE. A descendant of Van Helsing runs a medical practice for the supernatural? Yes please.
The Alex Craft series one of my favorite urban fantasy book series. So much so that while the last book came out only last year, I felt like it was such a long wait for GRAVE RANSOM. The wait was worth it though!
Being a collection of short stories, THE SHADOW OMNIBUS was a pretty quick and fun read with five haunting tales of horror and adventure. I was clued in to the fact that this was a collection of short stories by one author and not five after wondering at the similarities of the writing styles and lack of author list.
