Supernatural cops tend to take all sorts of liberties that always pull me out of the story. THE WOLF AT THE DOOR is a by-the-book thrill ride that has everything you could want: small town mysteries, racial tension, secrets galore, and an explosive romance that doesn’t get in the way of the story.
Genre: Mystery & Detective
MURDER ON THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS is another delightful installment in this series filled with clever twists and turns and unique, likable characters. It was especially fun to read this after seeing the recent Murder on the Orient Express movie and spot the similarities in some of the plot points and characters as the book is an homage to the Agatha Christie story.
THE CURIOUS AFFAIR OF THE WITCH AT WAYSIDE CROSS captures the Victorian interest in the supernatural elements really well with the plot revolving around a mysterious society and talk of otherworldly characters.
The MONSTER HUNTER FILES anthology is a brilliant view into the Monster Hunter International series through the lens of some of my favorite authors and some new authors I should explore in the future.
A police procedural should investigate the main characters, just as the characters are investigating a crime. In GRAVEYARD SHIFT, there doesn’t seem to be much individuality between its investigators, when there should be worlds of difference.
Who would have thought that the detached and distant Noir style would perfectly match that of a robot assassin? Ray Electromatic used to be in the detective business but turns out there’s a lot more money to be had killing people. With Ada, his monitoring computer, whispering in his ear, Ray drives around LA fulfilling his contracts.
WRAITH HUNTER is completely charming, walking the line between intense fight scenes and witty one-liners. Cal Kinsey is both self-deprecating and ambitious. He wants to be a key member of the DSI team, but PTSD has him second-guessing and acting rashly.
While I enjoyed STRANGE PRACTICE overall, I couldn’t help feel a little duped. The series carries Greta’s name but she’s one of six POV characters. It was a disappointing realization because Greta was my hook into STRANGE PRACTICE. A descendant of Van Helsing runs a medical practice for the supernatural? Yes please.
MAGICK & MAYHEM is a nice little cozy mystery with a sight supernatural twist. This was a fairly quick read with a pretty basic murder mystery and while I enjoyed reading it, there were a few smallish issues I had.
PIT PERFECT is a delightfully cozy supernatural mystery story. I enjoyed the different turns the story took in making you question everyone’s motives at some point (except Smooshie, Lily’s adorable dog).
