With its small doses of magic and potions, A SECRET HISTORY OF WITCHES is more a historical novel than fantasy. The novel follows six generations of Orchiére women handing down their witchcraft. As knowledge is passed down, elements are lost or corrupted. It doesn’t take long for ancestral rituals to be forgotten in the face of a changing society.
Genre: Love & Romance
We’re supposed to feel for the heroine of NEW ROMANCER; she’s been fired from her job, works for a tiny matchmaking site that is going out of business, and she’s a giant fan of classical literature. Unfortunately for us, she was fired for stealing important assets and messing up experiments, she’s not serious about her current job, and her infatuation with dead writers keeps her from seeing the potential in people in front of her.
With high action, loveable characters (and some quite despicable ones), and an Austen-like setting, NEWT’S EMERALD is a fun ride that is perfect for younger readers, while still having enough to interest adult readers.
It’s a good thing that Truthful grew up with a gaggle of boisterous boy cousins; when her family’s heirloom emerald is stolen, dressing up as a boy to scour the streets of London is as easy as donning a glamour-enchanted mustache and imitating her cousins.
