Don’t be fooled into expecting the usual YA ghostly love story, SUBLIME will entrap those tender expectations and twist them into horror. While the characters are as charismatic as expected from the expert romance duo Christina Lauren, most of the ghostly promise of the plot ultimately fell flat.
Simon R. Green’s stories tend to have a dark twisted humor to them that makes the horror of what is happening manageable. VOICES FROM BEYOND definitely is classic Simon R. Green with the difference being that these protagonists have slightly less super powers than his other books. I liked that as it made the story feel more intense and their victory even more earned.
Perhaps the best of the series thus far, THE RIPPER AFFAIR is the confluence of a dark mystery, an exploration of London’s altered and haunting landscape, and the emotional growing pains of Bannon’s little family. A fantastic book for any one of these elements, combining all three makes for a relentless, mesmerizing read.
If you haven’t read any spoilers for THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS, it’s hard to know what to expect. The bare-bones description doesn’t give much away, but though the story starts out a bit vague, told through the eyes of a ten year old girl, it soon becomes an engrossing, mind-blowing and genre defying experience that is nearly impossible to put down.
From an initial, chilling fall into darkness, Sarah Beth Durst brings hope and magic to a horrific, almost apocalyptic landscape. Don’t pick up this book unless you have time to make it through at least the first half of Lauren’s journey, as her grief and circumstances will make it painful to leave her until she finds her footing.
CONFESSIONS OF THE VERY FIRST ZOMBIE SLAYER (THAT I KNOW OF) felt very reminiscent of The Walking Dead with slow walking zombies, groups of people battling against each other for resources while a zombie horde threatens humanity’s very existence. Except this story revolves around kids with
RESURRECTION continues right where RENEGADE left of with the undead essentially making more dead in dark streets of London and the Ripper still at large stalking Abbie and trying to get her to become immortal like him. I tend to yawn at bad guys in fiction constantly asking the hero/heroine to ‘join them’ in whatever nefarious plot or
SEA OF SHADOWS is an action packed and kind of spooky departure from what I am used to with Kelley Armstrong’s writing. I really enjoyed the concept of a society that must keep angry spirits at bay with the help of specially born twins. Aside from dealing with the angry spirits there
A brilliant, chilling ghost story, SILENCE FOR THE DEAD created such a vivid world I couldn’t bear to put it down. This story is as romantic and terrifying as reading Jane Eyre for the first time, and as soon as I finished it I rushed back through my gothic favorites to continue savoring the tone.
Where the previous books in the St. Croix Chronicles were fast paced with danger and dangerous people lurking around every corner, TEMPERED deals with more internal battles and emotional trauma. Cherry has gone through so much externally dealing with the Veil and Society it felt fitting to have a story spend some time dealing with the internal effects of what happened to Cherry.
