It’s hard to be anything but seduced by the magical beauty of the WINTERSPELL cover. Luckily, the story that Legrand crafts has a magical beauty to match. Clara’s journey through Cane, coming into powers she didn’t know she had, her quest to save her father, and the delicate romance between her and Nicholas are all fascinating parts of this fairy tale.
SALT & STORM sounded so good, but unfortunately, the description and the book don’t actually match up, and not for the better. With a whiney heroine, strong deviation from a typical romance plotline, and some frustrating questions left unanswered, SALT & STORM isn’t a book I’ll be revisiting.
Sword and sorcery with a kickass heroine that would do any urban fantasy proud, THE BLOODBOUND offers romance, intrigue, and a fast moving plot that will immerse readers in this new world.
When a wicked bishop starts a witch hunt in Bavaria, orphan Rune finds herself targeted – but unlike most of the so-called witches caught in the net of hysteria, Rune really does have powers, and a reason to fear for her life. She also has an ally in the son of the local magistrate (called the Electorate), after he nearly tramples her with his horse. What follows in FOREST OF WHISPERS by Jennifer Murgia is a young adult romance, but, more importantly, a story about confronting the past, accepting where you come from, and embracing your strength.
It’s got to be a daunting prospect to retell the Beauty/Beast plot, considering how many times it’s been replayed, and not just in movies but in other books, too. (Beastly comes to mind.) But BEAUTY’S BEAST does a fairly good job of giving the Beast a new spin and sets the story in a nicely vague old world setting. In the end, though, it mostly pales in comparisons.
While not veering far from the historical romance formula, ONE BITE PER NIGHT still manages to delight the reader with it’s fun heroine, brooding hero, and matchmaking side characters. This is paranormal romance at its finest, with the romance taking center stage, and the paranormal just being one aspect of the story. One may worry that with the combination of historical and paranormal romance, that Ann would do neither well, but instead, she excels at both, with a wonderful story and world I can’t wait to revisit.
Perhaps the best of the series thus far, THE RIPPER AFFAIR is the confluence of a dark mystery, an exploration of London’s altered and haunting landscape, and the emotional growing pains of Bannon’s little family. A fantastic book for any one of these elements, combining all three makes for a relentless, mesmerizing read.
When the days of the Salem witch trials have passed, and you happen to be one of a handful of spell casters who survived, what’s an honest witch to do to eek out a livelihood in Boston? Become a freelance private investigator, otherwise known as a “theiftaker” of course! And when a case comes up that no normal person can solve, much less touch, then a spellcaster is clearly what you need. This is the world of A PLUNDER OF SOULS and there is a lot to like about it.
OF METAL AND WISHES hits that perfect blend of interesting world building, real characters, and romantic danger. Reminiscent of The Phantom of the Opera and THE HUNGER GAMES, these familiar components click together to create an altogether different dynamic. I couldn’t get this story out of my head until the very last page, and now I daydream about what comes next.
THE MERMAN AND THE BARBARIAN PIRATE was one of those books that captured me with the beautiful cover and failed to live up to the expectation it set. Though intriguing, THE MERMAN AND THE BARBARIAN PIRATE felt shallow and lacking in development.
