With bold art and a a mystery that is slowly revealed, ELSEWHERE VOLUME 1, the story of what really happened to Amelia Earhart. Unfortunately it fails to set itself apart from the thousand of other stories which explore new worlds. ELSEWHERE doesn’t quite work for me.
Genre: Comics & Graphic Novels
The Wicked + Divine series is about twelve gods who, every 90 years are reincarnated as humans and only live for two years. Unfortunately for me, THE WICKED + THE DIVINE CHRISTMAS ANNUAL issue was not in fact a one off Christmas special comic that a new reader to this series (it has 36 issues to it already!) could jump right in and enjoy.
Gertrude is back and taking names! After yet another failed attempt to escape Fairyland, Gert is more pissed than ever in I HATE FAIRYLAND VOLUME 3: GOOD GIRL. She’s the perfect anti-hero, with glimmers of regret as she hacks and slashes her way through people who should clearly know better than to get between her and her goal.
If you enjoy your fairy tales sweet and simple, I HATE FAIRYLAND is not for you. If on the other hand you like them messed up and full of violence committed by the most adorable 40 year old ever, you’re in for a vanilla and violence flavoured treat!
The third volume of THE BEAUTY is a prequel to the first volume, and I have to say I really loved getting to know characters before the glam hit the fan. In the early days, no one knew how deadly the Beauty could get… except for the psycho who is targeting the newly beautiful.
If you were one sexual encounter away from being permanently beautiful, would you do it? In Image Comics’ THE BEAUTY, physical perfection is a sexually transmitted disease and a lot of people have taken the plunge. Despite the constant low-level fever all the infected have, there’s no harm in it, is there?
It’s rare to find a book that feels darkly grown up and enchantingly child-like at the same time. CURSED PIRATE GIRL is spooky, touching and intricate, luring you into a topsy-turvy world with detailed images that pull you in.
SPILL ZONE is creepy. Wonderfully, awesomely creepy. In part because of the creepiness, I think the storyline of SPILL ZONE is a perfect fit for the graphic novel medium, and the images coupled with the story are delightfully scary and not something you want to read right before bedtime!
If I am the first person to recommend NIMONA to you, drop whatever you’re doing and check out the three first chapters, available as an excerpt. If you don’t fall in love with Nimona and Lord Ballister Blackheart, there is possibly something terribly wrong with you – or your sense of humour.
