Jonah Heywood is a drunk, a liar, and he probably owes you money. Although THE LEDBERG RUNESTONE introduces us to a familiar male urban fantasy character, the humour and the plotting keeps the novel fresh. When Jonah’s debtors come calling,, he has to work with an untrustworthy client to find a lost runestone.
You’ve just been thrown from a cliff into a river, your hands and feet are tied and you smashed your head on a rock. You’d be a bit snippy too, even with the nice (and nice-looking) fella who just dove in and saved you. Especially when you realise you don’t remember your name.
While Mina and Mikhail are not my favorite couple of the Vampire Blood series, THE EMERALD LILY is nonetheless a passionate tale of romance with two strong-willed and lovable characters to root for. As the war between the evil vampire queen and those opposed to her comes to a climax around them, you can’t help but want the two of them to be able to find peace and love with each other.
For a book with good writing and a distinct voice, REALM FM was a terrible disappointment. With a finale that rendered most of the characters useless, I was left wondering why a book that started out so fun soured so badly.
Rough, brutal and intense are three words that come to mind when trying to describe the reading experience of JUDGMENT ROAD. It has an outrageous premise that the reader is expected to buy into, of the horrific past of the members of the Torpedo Ink motorcycle club, but what I could see for a lot of people is that it would just be too much to take in a romance novel.
DEAD ON ARRIVAL sells itself as a zombie/medical thriller, but comes across as an almost-right-wing preachy cautionary tale about the dangers of technology. I thought the book was headed in FEED or THE AFFINITIES territory, but I was sorely disappointed in this near-future scifi novel.
It can be hard to build book to book momentum this far into a series, but with CAST IN DECEPTION Michelle Sagara manages to do just that. Titanic forces are moving, and the lives of Kaylin, her friends, and perhaps the whole kingdom are on the cusp of change.
I’ve got a lot of mixed feelings about NEMO RISING. I enjoyed the whole story, but when I sat down to write this review and really started thinking about it, I realized that I gave the book too much slack because of my love of 20,000 LEAGUES. If NEMO RISING wasn’t about Captain Nemo and the Nautilus, but about some other random submarine post Civil War I would not have liked it anywhere near as much.
I hate writing one bat reviews, especially on a book I wanted to like so much, but A SPOONFUL OF MAGIC fell completely flat for me.
With bold art and a a mystery that is slowly revealed, ELSEWHERE VOLUME 1, the story of what really happened to Amelia Earhart. Unfortunately it fails to set itself apart from the thousand of other stories which explore new worlds. ELSEWHERE doesn’t quite work for me.
