I was so excited to read THE MOUNTAIN OF KEPT MEMORY that I barely got past the comparison to Robin McKinley in the description. And while I loved it, I didn’t quite love it, if you know what I mean. I had a few complaints, but overall, this is a beautiful standalone fantasy with intrigue, action and a little bit of sweet romance.
Author: Rachel Neumeier
BLACK DOG was my favorite book of 2014, and PURE MAGIC is everything I could have hoped for in a sequel. The black dogs of this world are a little darker, a littler more demonic than Urban Fantasy’s usual shapeshifters. With sulfur and fire and violence in their hearts, they flow up through the human body, and burst into our world.
BLACK DOG is impossible to put down from page one. In one brilliant landslide of a book, Neumeier reimagines magic and shapeshifting, black dogs and vampires, and slips all of this intricate, clever world-building in around a cast of characters that are instantly appealing.
It’s always disappointing when a much anticipated book falls flat, which is probably why I fought so hard to like HOUSE OF SHADOWS more. A gorgeously written adventure fantasy, this book has magic and true love, knowledgeable cats and hidden passages, a mysterious old house and the gracious bowers of pleasure houses… and yet, despite all the things I loved, there were also long passages where I wasn’t interested at all.
