Review: Red Blooded (Jessica McClain #4) by Amanda Carlson

September 11, 2014 Review 2 ★★★

RED BLOODED is an unsurprising addition to the Jessica McClain series. By that I mean it follows Jessica’s mishaps and constant fight for survival in a fast-paced ride through the book. Though the setting is imaginative and different, and we learn more about Jessica’s history and the prophecy that everybody in the supernatural world is concerned about, which is rewarding, RED BLOODED lacks the interplay between Jessica and the more well-known characters, such as Rourke or Ray, which is disappointing.

ACES WILD is, in my opinion, a perfect start to the new Sin City Collectors series, which features an interesting premise in that the installments will be written by different authors. Since I already like Amanda Carlson’s other series, I was excited to see what she would bring to a totally different setting and characters. I was not disappointed. Though short, ACES WILD manages to pack in action and romance and enough of a hook to bring me back for the next story.

Remember when I said that HOT BLOODED, the second book in the Jessica McClain series, was action packed? I take it back. It was nothing compared to book three, COLD BLOODED. We pick up right after we left off in HOT BLOODED, and this time, Carlson pulls out all the stops- we’ve got witches, sorcerers, demons, vampires, ghosts, oracles, fae, and of course, werewolves. Plus, we finally find out what kind of creature Rourke shifts into! (Hint: something amazing and extinct.) As we follow Jessica on her journey to get to New Orleans, there is never a dull moment and I was quickly reminded how much I love this series.

HOT BLOODED follows the newest – and only – female werewolf in the world on her quest for her mate, who was kidnapped by an evil goddess at the end of the first book in the Jessica McClain series, FULL BLOODED. This is a good sequel with enough development to advance the series plot line, and a self contained story that has a satisfying ending for the reader.

Urban fantasy as a genre may see more than its fair share of titles as it continues to soar in popularity, but the number of really good newcomers to this genre is not as high. FULL BLOODED, the first book in Amanda Carlson’s new Jessica McClain series, follows in the celebrated footsteps of Patricia Briggs’ Alpha and Omega series and Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series with its comprehensive werewolf mythology, well paced action, and promising romance.
