BLACK BIRD OF THE GALLOWS fits in a lot of YA paranormal romance cliches while somehow also managing to be very unique and totally creepy. The creative mythology really gives a lot of oomph to what could be a very flat and boring YA paranormal romance.

With its small doses of magic and potions, A SECRET HISTORY OF WITCHES is more a historical novel than fantasy. The novel follows six generations of Orchiére women handing down their witchcraft. As knowledge is passed down, elements are lost or corrupted. It doesn’t take long for ancestral rituals to be forgotten in the face of a changing society.

This deep into the series, October Daye’s group of irregulars are beloved and entertaining, it is the unexpected appearance of her biological family that throws a wrench into the mix.
