MAGICK & MAYHEM is a nice little cozy mystery with a sight supernatural twist. This was a fairly quick read with a pretty basic murder mystery and while I enjoyed reading it, there were a few smallish issues I had.
Action layered upon politics upon history, COLD REIGN is a procedural that doesn’t slow down. Long time fans will enjoy Jane’s ever developing relationships and magic, but even those new to the series will find lots to enjoy in this installment.
In CITY OF MIRACLES everyone reaps what they sow. Taking place 20 years after the events of the first novel, CITY OF MIRACLES explores what happens when revolutions end, after important figures have gained and ceded power. The world continues, as it must. Characters age, characters die, but Sigrud je Harkvaldsson has been the only constant.
I’m not certain why I picked up FIRST YEAR. I pick up YA books a lot less often these days, and even less so if they’re about kids going to school. I’m glad I made an exception for The Black Mage series though because it is amazing.
DATING THE UNDEAD introduces a world where vampires are “out” and don’t need blood to survive. It’s also a world where vampires need a website to find dates though, which is a bit strange.

With such a well-established series, it is impossible to judge the emotional heft of GENTLEMAN JOLE AND THE RED QUEEN outside the context of its predecessors.

BLADE BOUND was a solid end to the thrilling and action filled Chicagoland Vampires series. It had everything you have come to expect from this series, from humor, Merit’s love of all of the food (there is an amazing moment involving chocolate that I want to experience myself), drama, cool fight scenes, to demonstrating the true strength of the bonds of love and friendship.

I read this book so quickly, I could barely believe it. The main character’s drive consumed me the way the zombies in the book consume the living.
Tim Kempfer if not a warrior. He’s a librarian on a very simple mission: kill the zombie that murdered his wife and son, and if needed, end them as well. How does he know which zombie he needs to kill in a post-apocalyptic, quarantined Seattle? Easy: his wife’s death was on the news, and it was so graphic and iconic of the disaster that the broadcasts have been playing it on a loop.
