If you follow my reviews you know how much I love my magic systems. That’s the reason I love reading new urban fantasy series, because each one, or at least the good ones, have a new unique magic system to explore. THRONE TO THE WOLVES attracted me because of the nerdiness of the main character. I kept reading because of the awesome magic system.
THE UNYIELDING is a fun romp through both the Norse underworld and the modern world, with a good dose of mischief and sexy romance. The characters are fun, the monsters are properly horrific and the stakes are high enough to matter. Although Ragnarok is no laughing matter, THE UNYIELDING makes it fun.
It’s rare for fantasy books to have a lived-in setting. Instead of existing just to explain backstory to the protagonist, DREAM EATER’s side characters don’t care if Koi Pierce is confused and uncomfortable. DREAM EATER also doesn’t waste time trying to make you like Koi Pierce. You like her or you don’t.
Action-packed and suspenseful, THESE RUTHLESS DEEDS is an excellent follow-up to THESE VICIOUS MASKS.
Jane Yolen’s THE EMERALD CIRCUS has a gorgeous layout, but a color scheme that I can’t look directly at without wincing. What cover art element is a deal breaker for you?
It is easy to see that Lexa Hillyer is a poet, as the language in SPINDLE FIRE is as intoxicating and disorienting as the best fairy magic.
MUDDY WATERS is set in a world where the boundaries between world have been taken down or thinned and an influx of supernaturals have come creating new rules, prejudices, and realities that humans and “Others” have to live with.
I don’t know why Paige Tyler’s two series are so different, but where I adore the SWAT (Secret Werewolf Alpha Team) series, the X-Ops series just isn’t my cup of tea. It’s not as fun as the first, and the characters aren’t as likeable or deep.
I will read nearly any story set in Chicago. This has led to great discoveries, such as the Chicagoland Vampires series. Unfortunately, THE FAIRYTALE CHICAGO OF FRANCESCA FINNEGAN was not one of the great discoveries.
BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is a sweet romance story with some added ghost mysteries to spice things up a bit. I love a good ghost story so I was pretty engaged in figuring out just why Brett’s aunt is haunting a piano installed in Ellie’s hotel.
