It’s rare to find a book aimed at children, with a distinct voice to the narrator, that is also enjoyable as an adult. SORCERY FOR BEGINNERS is a surprisingly mature story that deals with bullying, social injustice, betrayal and yes, sorcery.

GRIGORI is a modern fairy tale set in Russia, in deep dark libraries, high rise condos, and sprawling estates in the forests. It stars fun new mythology and just enough tropes to be fun.
Madelyn is a university professor on sabbatical, researching dragon mythology in Russia, when she stumbles on a secret and gets kidnapped by the very rich, very imposing Grigori.
The third volume of THE BEAUTY is a prequel to the first volume, and I have to say I really loved getting to know characters before the glam hit the fan. In the early days, no one knew how deadly the Beauty could get… except for the psycho who is targeting the newly beautiful.
If you were one sexual encounter away from being permanently beautiful, would you do it? In Image Comics’ THE BEAUTY, physical perfection is a sexually transmitted disease and a lot of people have taken the plunge. Despite the constant low-level fever all the infected have, there’s no harm in it, is there?
We’re supposed to feel for the heroine of NEW ROMANCER; she’s been fired from her job, works for a tiny matchmaking site that is going out of business, and she’s a giant fan of classical literature. Unfortunately for us, she was fired for stealing important assets and messing up experiments, she’s not serious about her current job, and her infatuation with dead writers keeps her from seeing the potential in people in front of her.
You know a book is good when you start slowing down your reading speed and putting the book down because you’re not ready to leave the world of the story. You’re not ready to leave behind the characters you’ve grown to care for, even if this could be their happily ever after. THE DRUID NEXT DOOR is that kind of story and I’m so glad that it lives up to the first book in the series, CUTIE AND THE BEAST.
Following one’s destiny isn’t easy, especially not when there are evil kings, pirates and dragons in the way. SO I MARRIED A SORCERER is the second book in The Embraced series by Kerrelyn Sparks and it was just as much fun as the first.
CHEW has never been a book for the weak-stomached. There is no way of getting around the fact that our main character eats the corpses of villains and victims in order to solve crimes. He doesn’t always wait until they are dead, either. It’s twisted, hilarious and heart-breaking all at the same time.
“If you marry me I’ll save your business” is a tried and true Harlequin Romance trope. I’ve seen it done with restaurants, bed and breakfasts and even an auction house. Usually, the big reveal is that they can be attracted to each other and still hold differences of opinion. This time, the reveal has a bit more fur and fang.
I tried to read THE DEATH AND LIFE OF SCHNEIDER WRACK with my speed reading app but there were so many words that were gigantic or outright invented there was no way that my eyes could keep up at 300 and 400 words a minute. I’m glad I slowed down; when I did I started really enjoying this book that is more akin to Alice In Wonderland than it is to most other zombie books.
