Misty Carlisle works as a bank teller in Boston's financial district. She's had more rotten luck in her life than most, except when her childhood crush shows up to cash his paycheck. Then her heart races and her mouth goes dry.

Gabe Fierro is a firefighter―and a phoenix. Like his brothers, his biggest challenge is finding a woman open-minded enough to accept a shapeshifter into her life. When his boyhood friend asks him to watch over his little sister Misty, he reluctantly agrees. But when the bank where she works gets held up, Gabe does everything he can to protect her. The two of them end up locked in the bank's vault...where things get steamier than either of them ever imagined.

Perhaps it's an odd sort of deja vu or I've read too many paranormal romances but towards the end of HOOKED ON A PHOENIX I started to feel like I've read this story before. Granted this is a unique story but it just felt done before in regards to certain plot points of what is a pretty decent and standard paranormal romance. The things I enjoyed about the book are what made it unique and why I picked it up in the first place. I loved the phoenix shifters and loved the mythology inserted in this story, especially how the whole phoenix rebirth was incorporated into modern times. The thing is that we were well towards to end of the book before any of the paranormal aspects that I liked were even relevant to the plot. The plot rolled along pretty steadily with the conflict being more internal than external which is what I am going with as the "villain" was kind of a dud and just left randomly.

While the plot was only interesting when phoenix shenanigans were happening, I enjoyed  the character relationships throughout the story. The phoenix brothers' banter and relationship with each other was hilarious and seemed pretty realistic to siblings in real life. Gabe and Misty's relationship is very sweet and their first meeting is fun and awkward which is the best kind of meeting for a couple. They go through a lot together and you definitely begin rooting for them in the end just so they get a break from literally all of the bad things happening to them at once.

HOOKED ON A PHOENIX was decent romance with fun character relationships though I wasn't a fan of the deus ex machina ending especially since it resulted in a pretty jarring tonal shift in the story.
