Saved by a Dragon (No Such Thing as Dragons, #1)

Click to display description

Ancient enemies. Broken oaths. Unbridled fire and passion.
Ella survived a childhood trauma that would have destroyed most people. The scars of losing her parents ran deep, but after being taken in and trained by the man who’d saved her, Ella became a living weapon. And the bane of the existence of a species of creatures who sought to reclaim control of the world.

Zarik is a Dragonborn shifter – a Ranger, tasked with keeping the streets of Los Angeles safe from all things that go bump in the night. He reveled in the fight and enjoyed striking down his enemies. To him, there was little better than doing his sacred duty.

What neither of them expected was to find somebody who was their equal in every way. A person who intrigued and compelled them. Somebody they could actually love in the dark, crazy, shadowy world they existed in.

But that’s exactly what they found.

Can their passion and their love survive in a world of violence and death? Can they somehow navigate the tricky waters of two people – humans and Dragonborn – who will kill to keep them apart? Can they somehow build a life together, despite the overwhelming and deadly obstacles?

Healed by a Dragon features a strong, skilled woman with curves and a tall, built Dragonborn shifter – tough, intelligent, thoughtful and passionate.

The muscles on the cover guy’s chest look like dinner rolls. I bet he could make them talk when he flexes. I certainly hope he’s healed by the dragon, because that dragon is aiming fire right at his dangle-bits.

Julia Says

This cover model looks so disappointed by his junk.  We are in agreement.

An orphaned kitten may be the only witness to romance and the impossible.

Officer Alex Wolf responds to a lot of ‘paranormal’ calls that aren’t. Exotic pet birds aren’t monsters and unusual dog breeds aren’t aliens. It’s a good thing he likes the animal control officers, but he both yearns for and dreads those calls where he runs into ACO Jason Shen. Jason’s scent is so delicious that Wolf has a difficult time humaning around him.

Animal control calls take a disturbing turn, though, when Wolf and his lizard-man partner, Krisk, discover the impossibly mummified bodies of rats and an unfortunate mother cat. The rescue of the cat’s sole surviving kitten not only gives Wolf more time with Jason, which is both perplexing and wonderful, but also leads to dangerous discoveries. Something inconceivable stalks the city and its officers of the law. Wolf has to figure out what it is before it can attack and drain the life from the people and the kitten he loves.

It’s not terrible. I like the light purple and that the cover guy is partially faded with the city in the background. But dang, the faded kitty and rat in the top corners are way too distracting. It’s a little strange to have a romance cover with a little kitty judging me. I wish they had just kept the rat near the centre image

Julia Says

I’m guessing the dust bunnies are in his pants?  And they’re *terrifying*?

Ivy Morgan hasn’t been feeling like herself lately. Not like anyone can blame her. After all, being held captive by a psychotic fae prince hell-bent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld is bound to leave some mental scars.

It’s more than that, though. Something dark and insidious is spreading throughout Ivy, more powerful than she could ever imagine… and it’s coming between her and the man she’s fallen deeply in love with, elite Order member Ren Owens.

Ren would do anything to keep Ivy safe. Anything. But when he makes a life altering choice for her, the fallout of his act has far reaching consequences that threaten to tear their lives apart. If Ivy is going to have any hope of surviving this, she must put aside the hurt and betrayal she feels, and work with not only those she loves, but with an enemy she would rather kill than ever trust. War is coming, and it soon becomes clear that what Ivy and Ren thought they knew about the Order, themselves, and even their enemies, has been nothing but a cluster of dangerous, deadly lies. Ivy knows she must be more than just brave to save those she loves–and, ultimately, to save herself.

Because behind ever evil fae Prince, there’s a Queen…

Girl floating with pretty dress? I’m kinda over it. It’s a nice looking cover, but I don’t think I could pick it out of a line up. The bright red of the girl’s hair, and the name of the title, make me think that they’re also purposely trying to connect the material with Disney’s Brave.

Julia Says

I’m not familiar with this series, but I would have guessed “mermaids” more than “fae” from this underwater cover. Still, pretty if forgettable.

Is there a cover? All I can see J.R. WARD. Seriously, the author’s name is taking up way too much space. It’s far too distracting.

Julia Says

These covers are always heavy on the color effects and photoshopping, but this fake rain + blank stare aren’t working for me.

Truthwitch (The Witchlands,... Windwitch (The Witchlands, #2)

Click to display description

From the New York Times bestselling author of Windwitch, an illustrated prequel novella set in the Witchlands setting up the forthcoming hotly anticipated Bloodwitch.

Set a year before TruthwitchSightwitch follows Ryber Fortiza, the last Sightwitch Sister as she treks deep underground to rescue her missing best friend. While there, she encounters a young Nubrevnan named Kullen Ikray, who has no memory of who he is or how he wound up inside the mountain. As the two journey ever deeper in search of answers, and as they brave one close call after another, a tentative friendship forms between them—one that might one day grow into something more.

Sightwitch is told through Ryber’s journal entries and her sketches, as well as through supplementary materials (such as other journals, pieces of songs, clippings from history books, flashbacks, etc.). Though meant as a companion novella, this story serves as a set up to Bloodwitch as well as an expansion of the world.

Yessss. There’s so much interesting stuff going on in this cover. The dagger, the crow, the light-source. It immediately tells me that this book will have adventure and fantasy. Now I need to go find out about Witchlands.

Julia Says

This is a beautiful novella cover, good fit for the series.

I like it…but I also hate it? I was surprised that this is a YA novel, since at first glance I would have assumed Middle-Grade. Individually, love the colours, the title font, and the little designs. But altogether, it’s almost too much. But it’s memorable? But it’s a lot. Basically, I’m conflicted.

Julia Says

Creepy in a fairy tale way, I like it.

The blue and gold of the sari are super eye-catching. I like that the ring of fire seems to be a progression from the previous novels (from little orb of light, to small flame, to RING OF FIRE)

Julia Says

I like this series’ aesthetic, and this is a nice addition.

It’s not a pretty cover. It definitely reminds me of the kid’s books that I used to have in the 80s. I think the biggestr turn-off is the green cloud around the sword, which just makes me think that the sword is farting. But if it’s a talking sword, then there’s no way it can also fart.

Julia Says

I would have loved this cover as a kid, a gorgeous adventure.

It’s great that you can immediately tell that this book is going to be a fairytale retelling. Which is helpful, since a lot of the Shoe-as-Cover books leave you uncertain about whether you picked up a fantasy novel. You’re either a Shoe-as-Cover person or you are not — and I am not. Maybe I just don’t like shoes.

Julia Says
