Mercenary Kate Daniels must risk all to protect everything she holds dear in this epic, can’t-miss entry in the thrilling #1 New York Times bestselling urban fantasy series.

Kate has come a long way from her origins as a loner taking care of paranormal problems in post-Shift Atlanta. She’s made friends and enemies. She’s found love and started a family with Curran Lennart, the former Beast Lord. But her magic is too strong for the power players of the world to let her be.

Kate and her father, Roland, currently have an uneasy truce, but when he starts testing her defenses again, she knows that sooner or later, a confrontation is inevitable. The Witch Oracle has begun seeing visions of blood, fire, and human bones. And when a mysterious box is delivered to Kate’s doorstep, a threat of war from the ancient enemy who nearly destroyed her family, she knows their time is up.

Kate Daniels sees no other choice but to combine forces with the unlikeliest of allies. She knows betrayal is inevitable. She knows she may not survive the coming battle. But she has to try.

For her child.

For Atlanta.

For the world.

James Says

There’s a problem in the industry when a huge series like Kate Daniels can’t get a good cover. The model isn’t bad but, the rest of it is just a bad photoshop job. A lion in the sky, a cityscape in the background, we’re only missing the shirtless guy.

Julia Says

The model is way too young, but at least they mussed her up a little bit.  Kate and Curran on the war path, whoo-ah!

What Lucy does not know is that her rescuers have their own agenda. Paolo Borgia, head of a deposed magical family, wants to use Ra for his own purposes. Lucy is given an alternative, to separate herself from her demon and family, which she gladly welcomes. When she finds out the truth about Ra, Lucy’s purpose changes from not only freedom, but to righting an ancient wrong.

Octavia, Lucy’s older sister, is in pursuit. She has been trained since birth to kill Lucy when Lucy loses her battle with Ra.. At the ritual to free Ra, the two sisters clash with surprising results. Octavia is possessed by Ra and Lucy is determined to free her sister and keep Ra from reshaping the world in his image.

There is one small problem. Lucy has been murdered. However, she’s not about to let a small detail like that keep her from correcting her mistakes. Lucy will save Octavia, even if it kills her again.

I can’t really put my finger on why I don’t like this. I really easily see how others would like this one, but it just creeps me out.

Julia Says

This looks like the Mercedes Lackey Urban Fantasy book covers of my youth. I’m not a huge fan, but the nostalgia vibe alone is nice.

James Says

The monochromatic cover sort of works with the grave, ghostly theme, but I still don’t like monochromatic covers. And I’m undecided on how I feel about the rose petals for lips.

Julia Says

Not a photoshop win, the pop of rose petals can’t make the background image more interesting. Even making the petals her lips doesn’t make me like this one much more.

Ever wanted to grow a five-story tall flower in central park? How about fight a deadly battle under the subway tunnels of Manhattan?

Don’t worry. I never wanted to either. But if you’re ever being chased by ladies made of mist and you have to save the girl with the sparkly eyes you’ve never had the guts to say actual words to, there’s an app for that.

I found a magic cell phone, opened an app I shouldn’t have, burned down the set shop for my high school’s theatre, and it was all downhill from there. A drag queen seer who lives under a bridge is my only hope for keeping my mom alive, and I think the cops might be after me for destroying my dad’s penthouse.

But it gets better! Now I’m stuck being the sidekick to the guy who got me into this mess in the first place. It’ll be a miracle if I survive until Monday.

James Says

A bunch of random images thrown onto a canvas. I’m guessing they are important story elements, but I wouldn’t pick it up.

Julia Says

The first words that come to mind are “hot mess”.  The purple flower conflicts with the orange fire, the title (already too long) isn’t clear or well presented.  I had to study this cover to figure out the title, which was unfortunate, given how much the colors hurt my eyes.

James Says

The model is wearing sensible clothes which is awesome, but there isn’t anything special about this cover.

Julia Says

These covers have been consistently awesome from the start, this one is no exception.  I can’t always tell them apart, but I always know when I’m looking at Jane Yellowrock cover.

153 years in the future, Earth doesn’t look much like it used to

Holly Danger’s current assignment, gleaned from a set of foggy instructions and a handful of coin stuffed into a slot, is to pick up a street kid who’s about to terminate himself off a cliff. And, as a rule, she doesn’t turn down currency. Her job as a salvager keeps her fed and clothed above the norm, which isn’t saying much.

The norm in this city is a scrape-by existence in a post-apocalyptic world, where the rain never stops, food is always scarce, and the elite have deserted the ranks in search of something better. Picking up this urchin won’t take much time, even if he’s located outside city limits. Her craft is fast, her weapons deadly, and her tech has been optimized as well as it can be for a climate clogged with iron dust.

But things take a big turn when she decides to become the boy’s guardian instead of hand him over. Outskirts have descended on the city, and their plans don’t include playing nice. When her crew is backed against a graphene wall, it’s a good thing her Gem is primed and ready to go. It’s almost as deadly as she is…

James Says

I’m used to big name authors having their name take up half the cover. But I’ve never seen the name of a first book in a series taking up 75% of the cover.

Julia Says

I find the bottom image more interesting than the *huge* title, but this reminds me of the classic Thriller/SciFi covers.  Either the title or the author gets GIANT FONT and everything else is second fiddle.

Rhys Kincade has never been able to explain his magical abilities. Olivia is the first person he’s encountered who shares his gifts. But before he can ask her about them, they find themselves under attack by a pack of werewolf assassins. An even deadlier threat follows, and the pair is forced to rely on each other as they fight unknown enemies—and an ever-growing attraction between them.

James Says

Shirtless guy. Plus the gun is horribly photoshopped. You can see the front clip for the sling, but don’t see where it wraps around, and the magazine is just awkwardly photoshopped around the guys hand.

Julia Says

Hahah, his gun butt looks like the worlds *worst* nipple piercing.

I’d say this is the female equivalent of a shirtless guy.

So when Dax Williams, de facto alpha of the Silver Springs pack, pays an unwelcome visit, Sierra’s ready to toss him out. However, the man’s in a tough spot. The pack elders sabotaged his fight for alpha against his brother, driving him from his lands. Sierra hates underhanded moves like that, so she agrees on an alliance.

As they work together, she witnesses an alpha who wants to do right by his pack, not just the cocky wiseass she first met. Their growing attraction blazes hot, but the moment she and Dax lock lips, a mating bond emerges. Sierra sure as hell isn’t ready to share that intimate connection with a stranger, and the thought of forever sends Dax running.

Before they can talk, the Tribe commanding the East Coast shifters arrives to settle the dispute. Dax and his brother’s punishment for their pack’s civil war is a free-for-all on their lands. Not only does he have to defeat his brother, but any challenger in the region. Despite Dax and Sierra’s initial resistance, his wily charm relaxes her control-freak tendencies while her steadfast support bolsters his strength. Yet every new opponent places their newfound relationship under siege—one misstep, one wrong blow in the ring, and Dax could leave in a bodybag.

James Says

Partially beheaded models is always a no in my opinion. Now how do I pick the worst of all of these covers?

Julia Says

Typical images, but their composition together is worse than usual.  I don’t like how the first word of the title is transparent, and that plus the waterfall makes all of the lighting on this cover distracting and uneven.  It’s hard to see where one image begins and the other ends.
