Some boundaries are made to be crossed…

A rare Vedjorn bear shifter, Eric Mikkelson lives on his own terms. So allying with wolf shifters, even gorgeous Julia Jacobs, bristles his loner instincts. But Eric must protect his infant son from the dangerous shifter cult stalking him. However, keeping JJ at arm’s length proves nearly impossible. She gets under Eric’s skin, exposing them to new risks as their staggering attraction defies Pack laws, and JJ’s own dark secrets fester between them.

When the safe haven of their shifter-friendly town is violated, lying low is no longer an option. Julia and Eric must embrace the power of their inner beasts, even if it means sacrificing their forbidden bond.

This one surprises me. Normally I absolutely hate covers in this sub-genre. But this is one I could actually see myself picking up. This cover has really nice artwork instead of an AWFUL photoshop job. And I actually like the bear effect as well.

Kristina Says

It looks like the bear has a ponytail and the guy looks like he has a magic act in Vegas…in the 1980s. But they are fully clothed so yay?

The stunning conclusion to the New York Times bestselling YA superheroes series.

The Zeroes are in disarray.
One of them has vanished into thin air.
One of them is in prison.
The rest of them are on the most-wanted list.
And something big is brewing.

After defeating Swarm in a breath-taking stand-off, Nate has been arrested for his murder. In prison and isolated, he can’t use his powers of influence at all. Flicker, Chizara, Kelsie and Ethan are on the run and in hiding from the FBI who believe the Cambria Five are domestic terrorists. And Agent Phan and the FBI have a secret weapon up their sleeve – a teenager with a superpower that the Zeroes haven’t encountered yet.

Meanwhile, Sonia Sonic and her growing band of weird-hunters are tracking inexplicable events across the country – and their investigations lead them to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, where the celebrating crowds promise enormous power to anyone who can channel it. Time is running out for the Zeroes, but they must learn to trust each other again and combine their powers for good – to avert the looming disaster.

A brilliant, action-packed conclusion to the superb Zeroes series.

I hate covers that are just a logo. I would never pick up a book with this cover.

Kristina Says

I like the grafitti mark there. The title font is not completely to my liking but it’s good.I am curious to know why the second book in this series is so different from the other two.

Everyone in Vallen knows that ice wolves and scorch dragons are sworn enemies who live deeply separate lives.

So when twelve-year-old orphan Anders takes one elemental form and his twin sister, Rayna, takes another, he has to question whether they are even related. Still, whether or not they’re family, Anders knows that Rayna is his best and only true friend. She’s nothing like the brutal, cruel dragons who claimed her as one of their own and stole her away.

To learn what he needs to rescue her, Anders will have to enlist at the foreboding Ulfar Academy, a school for young wolves that values loyalty to the pack above all else. But for Anders, loyalty is more complicated than blind obedience, and friendship is the most powerful shape-shifting force of all.

New York Times bestselling author Amie Kaufman delivers heart-pounding adventure and breathtaking magical inventions in this unforgettable story about finding one’s place in a sharply divided world.

James Says

I love the artwork, and I agree normally disembodied animal heads don’t work, but when it’s not photshopped it does.

Kristina Says

I like the illustrated look and while disembodied animal heads are usually pretty awkward this was is pretty nicely done.

James Says

This is just a lazy photoshop job for all the reasons Kristina lists.

Kristina Says

They didn’t even try to make it look like the wolf was in the same place as the girl. Unless they were going for that look. I am not a huge fan of the author’s name covering her head.

I prefer my artwork to be a little more advanced, but for a middle grade book it’s solid.

It’s a nice middle grade book cover.

In this gripping sci-fi thriller, genetically altered teens fight for survival in a near-future society that is redefining what it means to be human.

Sixteen-year-old Jimi knows people change, but nothing could prepare her for what’s about to happen to her best friend, Del. Del is obsessed with becoming a chimera (ki-mir-a): a person who pays back-alley geneticists, known as “”genies,”” to illegally splice animal genes into their own. The resulting physical changes have scared lawmakers into drafting legislation declaring chimeras officially nonpersons—so when Del goes missing, Jimi is desperate to find him before he alters himself forever.

As she tries to save him, Jimi must face down unscrupulous people and risk her own life—all while knowing that if getting spliced is the choice Del has made, it means he’s leaving her behind forever.

James Says

I like the science stuff on the cover. I’m not sure if it was intentional or not, but the tail also looks like a logrimithic spiral. Still isn’t a cover I’d pick up, but the math does intrigue me.

Kristina Says

I like the tail curl spiral. I think its a tail? It really pops on the black background.

But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother’s stories are set. Alice’s only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother’s tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.

The cover is too busy for me.

Kristina Says

There is a lot going on in this cover but it’s organized in a way that it doesn’t overwhelm. And it gives off a fantastical vibe.

I love the idea of the cover. I just wish it was artwork instead of graphic design.

James Says

I hate covers that just have an object and words. There are so many books out there in the world to read. Why would I bother picking up one with a lazy cover?

Kristina Says

Not a fan of objects attempting to be parts of words. The sword is not a good substitute ‘A’. I do like that shade of purple and the red emphasizes the word ‘heart’.
