The Great Extinction, the prophesied war between the humans and the Supernaturals, has begun.

Born a Supernatural, Juliet Sawyer has the ability to save the world from disaster. But after barely escaping the underground, power-sucking prison known as the Void, she finds herself on the brink of death and in the middle of a vengeful war. To survive, she’ll have to make a deal with her human captors. But the stakes are raised when she learns the government is holding her sister hostage. To rescue her, Juliet must become a weapon for humanity, fighting against her own kind—including Riley West, the boy she fell deeply in love with—and by whom she was abandoned.

Forced to desert Juliet, Riley is on a mission to capture the human’s president and bring her to the Supernatural’s king. But if he fails, there will be no stopping the Night of Grief, which will unleash horrors capable of destroying humans and Supernaturals alike. With battle lines drawn, amid a flurry of secrets and betrayals, can Juliet and Riley rescue their love as well as all life on Earth? Or will someone get caught in the crossfire?

James Says

I agree it’s a horrible photoshop disaster, and it has the dreaded cityscape in the background. But at least they both have clothes on.

Kim Says

There is no saving this photoshop disaster. Those two people have never been in the same picture and have probably never been on the same continent. I hate his facial expression too.

Twenty years ago, the boundary between worlds dropped. It will be a while before the political, social, and religious upheaval settles down but the good news is: now you can book a vacation to Valhalla as easily as you can go to Las Vegas. Your real estate agent might be a Wood Sprite. Your mechanic might be a Minotaur. For better or for worse, Supernormals are part of Earth life.

Five years ago, Tessa Reddick was convicted of killing her entire family: 37 Witches from one of the most powerful covens in history. She’s been locked up at Lakeland Psychiatric hospital, still grieving but mad as hell at whoever–or whatever–put her there.

Half an hour ago, a handsome FBI agent showed up to spring Tessa from the joint
–but there’s a price. A series of murders is picking off Supernormals and the feds need the help of the last known Reddick Witch.

Determined to learn who set her up for the fall, help solve the FBI crimes, and maybe get closer to her mysterious (and seriously hot) Dark Elf partner, Tessa is more than willing to play Witchy Nancy Drew.

But Tessa has few friends left and something is coming for her, too – maybe it’s the one who framed her and killed her coven, or perhaps a new foe with a taste for Witch’s blood.

Solving crimes, doing magic, drinking bourbon. It’s dirty work, but somebody has to do it.

James Says

This is just an utter disaster. It looks like the graphic designer just threw up on the cover.

Kim Says

There’s too much going on here. The series title, the flare, the pink and teal stuff – no.

James Says

This is some awesome art. I love seeing the characters like this. So much better than photoshop. Why do YA books get art but we get crap?

Kim Says

This is the kind of YA novel I would have picked up when I was the target audience. It has a cool graphic novel feel.

Enter New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s breathtakingly passionate Guild Hunter world with the story of a woman who isn’t a vampire or an angel…or human…

Once a broken girl known as Sorrow, Holly Chang now prowls the shadowy gray underground of the city for the angels. But it’s not her winged allies who make her a wanted woman—it’s the unknown power coursing through her veins. Brutalized by an insane archangel, she was left with the bloodlust of a vampire, the ability to mesmerize her prey, and a poisonous bite.

Now, someone has put a bounty on her head…

Venom is one of the Seven, Archangel Raphael’s private guard, and he’s as infuriating as he is seductive. A centuries-old vampire, his fangs dispense a poison deadlier than Holly’s. But even if Venom can protect Holly from those hunting her, he might not be able to save himself—because the strange, violent power inside Holly is awakening…

No one is safe.

James Says

It looks like a Matrix poster to me, but he has clothes on. Isn’t it sad that has become the standard for a decent cover?

Kim Says

He has a shirt on, but sunglasses at night? Really?

James Says

Floating head, green lightning, yellow cloud, plus stone dragon equals bad photoshop.

Kim Says

This really looks like a fan cover made by a thirteen year old, not something that will actually end up on a bookshelf – in hardcover no less! Ugh.

“My name is Kaeleen Donovan. I’m a Theosian-a minor goddess. They call me Fury.”

By day, I run the Crossroads Cleaning Company, and I also read fortunes and cast hexes at Dream Wardens, a magical consulting shop. But by night, I’m oath-bound to Hecate, Goddess of the Crossroads. Hecate charged me from birth with the task of hunting down Abominations who come in off the World Tree and sending them back to Pandoriam.

Deep in the Wild Wood, we’ve hidden out from both the ruthless Devani and the zombie invasion going on in Seattle. In her anger, Gaia retaliates and devastates the city. The Order of the Black Mist has thrown off their secrecy and are openly vying for dominance with the Devani, as the ruthless warriors of light destroy all who question the control of the Corp Rats. As I learn more out in the wilds about the world of the Fae, and as our group of survivors strengthens its bonds, Hecate beckons me into the woods where I stumble on a secret that could turn the tide. But it will put us on the front lines as targets–and it will mean letting go of my fear of the fire and fully accepting my Theosian nature.

James Says

This is an awesome cover. I love the flaming ghostly sword and that she’s appropriately dressed. My only complaint is the hawk’s position, it doesn’t really fit on her shoulder well.

Kim Says

This is nice, she looks like she means business. I prefer this one to the previous books too, makes her look less passive. That sword rocks!

But now she realizes all that was just the warm up.

Ancient forces that once terrorized the world want to return, and Cassie is the only one who can stop them.

Model + green lightning = bad photoshop. I think I’m getting deja vu here.

Kim Says

I do like the curly/messy hair though, that must have taken some work to draw up nicely. Still, a bit boring.

James Says

I hate monochromatic covers and I really dislike it when the name of the book takes up the whole cover.

Kim Says

It’s like the series is trying to get more and more boring covers as it progresses. I can’t tell what that thing behind all the text is, and I’m afraid I’ll pass out of boredom if I look at this cover any longer.

  1. Nadia

Regarding the Nalini Singh’s cover, it is actually a cover in character with the protagonist in the next book. Although the character wears wraparound and not ray-ban.

    • Julia

That’s what I was thinking too, Nadia. Venom wears sunglasses to cover his snake eyes, right?

      • Kristina

Yep, that is Venom and he has snake eyes that warrant him wearing sunglasses indoors and at night.

  2. Barb (boxermommyreads) Briggs

You know I’ve stared at the cover for Muddy Waters several times before and couldn’t make out what the heck “ther where” meant. TOTALLY missed out on the “O.” Guess that means the cover isn’t hitting the mark huh?
