Play with fire, pay the price.

Leila’s years on the carnie circuit were certainly an education. What she didn’t learn: how to be a vampire, or how to be married to the most famous vampire of them all. Adjusting to both has Leila teetering on a knife edge between passion and peril, and now the real danger is about to begin…

Vlad must battle with a centuries-old enemy whose reach stretches across continents and whose strength equals his own. It isn’t like Vlad to feel fear, but he does…for Leila, because his enemy knows she is Vlad’s greatest weakness. As friend and foe alike align against him—and his overprotectiveness drives Leila away—Vlad’s love for his new bride could be the very thing that dooms them both…

Thank you for joining us for our “re-read along” of the Night Prince series as we get ready for the release of INTO THE FIRE! We’re continuing this week with BOUND BY FLAMES, and our schedule will be as follows:

February 10 – ONCE BURNED
February 17 – TWICE TEMPTED
February 24 – BOUND BY FLAMES

Here are our thoughts this week! If you haven’t read the book, feel free to skip our possible spoilers, and check out our original review of BOUND BY FLAMES!

Kristina: Wow, so much destruction in this book! From a history nerd point of view, I was kind of annoyed that Vlad’s house gets destroyed. All of those priceless artifacts and paintings! Oh, and Vlad’s home being gone was sad too. What Leila goes through when she is kidnapped was kind of hard to get through. It was just so violent and sadistic. She really proves herself as a fighter and survivor. A great match for Vlad. I liked how Vlad slowly starts to break down his emotional walls when it comes to Leila in BOUND BY FLAMES.  Centuries old killers can learn new things! One thing. Leila really needs to stop getting kidnapped. It’s kind of sad that this is her fourth time…

Kim: BOUND BY FLAMES was my least favourite of the three first books. I didn’t hate it, but I have to say I was pretty sick of Vlad and Leia’s fighting. He is controlling because he’s a medieval vampire who has lost too many people that he loves – we get it. It just gets annoying when that has been the theme of the last two books.

Still, the intrigue in this one is fun, and I was glad that Maximus was featured again, although again, he does all sorts of slightly dodgy things to “protect” Leila, who honestly doesn’t need that much protection. There’s macho, and then there’s Vlad and Maximus.

I’m really hoping that the last book addresses some of this. You can’t have a series with characters who don’t change, otherwise why read the next book?

Kate: All in all, BOUND BY FLAMES is, like Kim, my least favorite of the first three books. Part of that is personal preference – the brutal beginning of the book while Leila is being held captive is awful, and I can’t really get past that part of it. But beyond that, the book just doesn’t feel real. (I know, we’re talking about paranormal romance here, so I mean that it’s very hard for me to suspend disbelief.)

I mean, basically, Vlad is Vlad and his enemies are awful. Leila continues her streak of getting kidnapped and tortured, and Leila’s dad is a jerk. It doesn’t feel as if there’s that much movement forward in this book, even with Vlad becoming a bit more emotional with Leila, and even sharing some secrets with her.

Regardless, I am very excited to read the fourth book, because there are endings that need to be tied up, and I am very curious as to how Frost will go about that!

Discussion Questions:

  • Now that we’ve read all three, which of the first three books is your favorite?
  • What loose ends do you hope that Frost ties up in book four?
  • Since we’re not in Maximus’s head, it’s hard to tell exactly whose side he is on. Did you think he had betrayed Leila and Vlad or did you believe he was on the good guys’ side the whole time?
  • What do you think of the secret that Vlad reveals to Leila at the end of the book regarding his “drunken” indiscretion?
  • Do you think Szilagyi is really dead this time? After all, we thought he was dead before….
  • What was your favorite part of BOUND BY FLAMES?

I think Maximus was on Leila and Vlad’s side. His punishment was one of the things that bothered me about the third book. It felt like he was set up so Vlad could have an outlet for being jealous.

With the romantic tension created by their breakup, I do think the second installment was the best of these. The third didn’t do much, I agree, in the way of driving the plot forward, and the scenarios (i.e. Leila being captured) is the same, so what you end up with is an intensification of the violence. I thought Maximus was played well here, because for a while you’re not sure whose side he’s on. So there are powerful moments, to be sure, but it leaves you questioning their significance, and their originality, which is sad for a series that has a lot of potential.

Awesomely thought out comment! I totally didn’t think about how the scenarios being the same leads to intensification of the violence!
