Emily is a teenage girl pulled from our world into a world of magic and mystery by a necromancer who intends to sacrifice her to the dark gods. Rescued in the nick of time by an enigmatic sorcerer, she discovers that she possesses magical powers and must go to Whitehall School to learn how to master them. There, she learns the locals believe that she is a "Child of Destiny," someone whose choices might save or damn their world ... a title that earns her both friends and enemies. A stranger in a very strange land, she may never fit into her new world ...

...and the necromancer is still hunting her. If Emily can't stop him, he might bring about the end of days.

SCHOOLED IN MAGIC is a book that's been on my to-read list for a long time, so I was thrilled when I saw it pop up in my Audible feed and instantly purchased it. SCHOOLED IN MAGIC is everything I'd hoped the Merchant Princes series would turn into combined with Harry Potter but with a real magic system.

SCHOOLED IN MAGIC starts off right in the action. Within just a few pages, Emily, a teenage girl from our world, gets abducted and taken to a necromancer's lair in a medieval world. One thing leads to another, and Emily ends up going to one of the schools for magic in her new world. Which takes us to a rich explanation of the magic system in Schooled in Magic. Magic is not as simple as waving a wand and citing a brief incantation, it is a much longer and more labor intensive process. At one point, Emily describes the magic system as being similar to computer programming. It's a magic system which I found very different and unique.

The next major part of SCHOOLED IN MAGIC is Emily introducing modern technology to her new world. Unlike in the Merchant Princes series, Emily starts by introducing some very basic techs, which is fitting since Emily is just a teenager and doesn't know just how everything works in our world.

All in all, SCHOOLED IN MAGIC is a great start to a series, and I look forward to following Emily on her adventures as Podium Publishing releases more of the series on Audible.

It’s nice to see that self-published works succeed on Audible as well as traditional books- I’m hoping to convert the first book in my fantasy series, A Vision in Crimson, shortly after its launch. My husband and I used to read aloud to each other some nights in lieu of tv, but with kiddos sleeping in cribs right next to us that has sadly gone away. At least someone can read to me this way!
