Kate Says

This is a great cover. It fits with the first one, while still being different. I like the blue color scheme of this one better, too.

Kim Says

She looks like she’s one part demon, one part gargoyle, and I love it. A properly feirce looking UF heroine.

In Chris Sharp’s new epic fantasy Cold Counsel, Slud of the Blood Claw Clan, Bringer of Troubles, was born at the heart of the worst storm the mountain had ever seen. Slud’s father, chief of the clan, was changed by his son’s presence. For the first time since the age of the giants, he rallied the remaining trolls under one banner and marched to war taking back the mountain from the goblin clans.

However, the long-lived elves remembered the brutal wars of the last age, and did not welcome the return of these lesser-giants to martial power. Twenty thousand elves marched on the mountain intent on genocide. They eradicated the entire troll species—save two.

Aunt Agnes, an old witch from the Iron Wood, carried Slud away before the elves could find them. Their existence remained hidden for decades, and in that time, Agnes molded Slud to become her instrument of revenge.

For cold is the counsel of women.

I can’t say I hate this, but I’m not in love with it either. It doesn’t give me a good feel for what kind of book I’d be picking up.

Kim Says

This screams high fantasy to me, and I like that he’s an orc and not just another human with a sword.

This is awesome. I would definitely pick this book up and read it. Plus, no white washing!

Kim Says

The action, the expression on the boy’s face, the sword, the guns… I love all of it. The art style really fits. The author’s name is a bit hard to read, but that doesn’t even matter.

The darkly magical sequel to THE WITCH’S KISS burns wickedly bright.

Kate Says

They went downhill from the first cover. The title placement just looks awkward and it’s weird that the top part of the ice is smoother than the bottom part. I’m just not a huge fan of this one.

Kim Says

I feel they lost the appeal of the blood on the thorns from the first cover. That was spooky and effective. This could just be another Frozen tie-in.

Kim Harrison returns to her beloved Hollows series with The Turn, the official prequel to the series that will introduce fans and readers to a whole new side of Rachel Morgan’s world as they’ve never seen it before!

Can science save us when all else fails?

Trisk and her hated rival, Kalamack, have the same goal: save their species from extinction.

Death comes in the guise of hope when a genetically modified tomato created to feed the world combines with the government’s new tactical virus, giving it an unexpected host and a mode of transport. Plague takes the world, giving the paranormal species an uncomfortable choice to stay hidden and allow humanity to die, or to show themselves in a bid to save them.

Under accusations of scientific misconduct, Trisk and Kal flee across a plague torn United States to convince leaders of the major paranormal species to save their supposedly weaker kin, but not everyone thinks humanity should be saved.

Kal surreptitiously works against her as Trisk fights the prejudices of two societies to prove that not only does humanity have something to offer, but that long-accepted beliefs against women, dark magic, and humanity itself can turn to understanding; that when people are at their worst that the best show their true strength, and that love can hold the world together as a new balance is found.

Kate Says

So I read Harrison’s blog posts when she revealed the cover and I like the individual elements since she explained why they were part of it, but all in all, this is kind of bland when taken as a whole.

Kim Says

It looks like a random teen novel with another sad girl in a beautiful dress. There have been so many of these in the last 10 years, you’d think they’d move on.

All the women in Iris and Malina’s family are born with a gleam—a unique way of manipulating beauty through magic. Seventeen-year-old Iris sees flowers as fractals and turns her kaleidoscope visions into glasswork, her twin sister Malina interprets moods as music, and their cold, distant mother Jasmina bakes scenery into decadent treats at her confectionery in Old Town Cattaro, Montenegro.

Jasmina forbids Iris and Malina to share their gleams with anyone, and above all, she forbids them to fall in love—being discovered could shatter the quiet lives they’ve built in their tucked-away, seaside town. But Iris and Malina are tired of abiding by their mother’s rules and rebel in secret whenever they can.

Yet when a mysterious, white-haired woman attacks their mother and leaves her hovering between life and death, the sisters unearth an ancient curse that haunts their line—a wicked bargain that masquerades as a blessing, and binds the twins’ fates—and hearts—to a force larger than life. To save each other, they must untangle a thousand years of lies and reveal their own hurtful secrets. But even the deepest sacrifice might not be enough.

Wicked Like a Wildfire is the first book in a sumptuous, bewitching duology about the power of love, death, magic, and the many faces of beauty.

Kate Says

Oh em gee so much yes to this cover. I love it. It is more my own personal aesthetic that love flowers and purple, but this is beautiful. (I understand that my complaint of not knowing what kind of book it is would also apply to this one, but this cover is pretty, and therefore I am giving it a pass.)

Kim Says

This book is beautiful, and the spooky little details that you discover as you pay closer attention do speak to the darker themes in the book. The colours are superb, this book will be a joy to have on a display or bookshelf.

I can’t really decide how I feel about this one, but I really love the smokey horse, so I’m going to give it a thumbs up. My only complaint is the title is a little too undefinied, the edges are a little too blurry.

Kim Says

The title is hard to read, and the desert/town combo are a bit too bright against the smokey horse, but the smokey horse is pretty cool.

Kate Says

While I don’t love it as much as Our Savage Song (I think the blue makes it feel more melencholy), this cover is still amazing.

Kim Says

That slightly broken violin works for me, made me look twice. It’s like the cover of the first book has been shattered.

Hell On Earth

When the Chthonians brought the primal gods to a truce at the end of their great war, part of the pact they forged was that the worst of the evil the gods had unleashed against each other and mankind would be forever banished.

But forever is a long time. And nothing can contain those determined to find a way back.

To catch evil, it takes evil . . .

While Thorn is able to contain the demons unleashed on the ground, the ones who prey on the innocent sailors and sea faring travelers are beyond his reach.

For the sake of humanity, he makes a shaky alliance with an old foe, Marcelina. In the form of the ship they sail upon, she assembles a team under the command of Captain Devlyn Nathaniel Bane, one of the most notorious and bloodthirsty pirates to ever sail the high seas.

Damned and murdered by his own, Bane is out for revenge. With his own secret agenda, he agrees to take charge of the motley crew of pirates and brigands, and to protect the seas from the preternatural terrors that seek to devour every unwary soul they can take.

Theirs is a sacred and deadly task, as they are hunted by their prey and human authorities alike. If they fail, the world will fall to the ancient gods of chaos, and anarchy will reign. Most of all, the Southern gate, where the greatest, most powerful darkness is imprisoned, will be opened and there will be no stopping it.

It’s yo ho ho and a bottle of high seas stakes where the souls of all humanity are the ultimate prize and bargaining chip.

Kate Says

It took me a little while to realize this is a ship. At least, I think it’s a ship. And while that’s cool, the fact that I had to stare at it makes it less likable in my opinion.

Kim Says

I thought it was a sword with a sexy handle. There is so much blur and stuff going on, this just looks like a standard fantasy book that would never get a second look from me.

Kate Says

The red wash over the entire cover is what is turning me off from this one. I think it’s not too bad for a novella, but would it have killed them to give it color?

Kim Says

It’s a novella, and it shows. It’s like they took a picture and made it red instead of fixing any issues that they had with it. Just boring.

I might only be giving this some credit because at least they’re wearing shirts, but she looks like her arm is going to start hurting soon, and it also looks like she only has hair on one side of her head.
