Simone Brightston knows she can beat the rap her enemies are pinning on her. An Irish witch is nobody's fool, and she didn't get to her position on the high council without serious power. But her cousins want her to hide out—and they somehow convinced her arch nemesis to play getaway driver.
Of all the men she's known, Nikolaj Veis is the hardest to intimidate. With his demon-dark eyes and his inscrutable beauty, he's as desirable as he is dangerous. And he knows better than to underestimate Simone. So when he pulls up on a roaring bike and tells her to climb on or fight it out, she grabs a handful of jacket and holds on tight. Running from the law may not be the smartest plan. But when it comes to Nick, hot pursuit and a blazing fast ride are exactly what Simone's looking for . . .
WICKED BURN is a suspenseful paranormal romance with lots of drama and a very strong hero and heroine. With a great couple at its core, it is an enjoyable book for those who are familiar with the series, though it had a few issues.
Simone and Nikolaj (or Nick) are a great couple. With her witch abilities of throwing fire, she's more than an equal match for Nick, even if he is a powerful demon who can attack minds. After leaving her before, he comes back into her life to claim her with a vengeance. Simone is obviously not super on board with this plan, so we have that conflict between Simone and Nick. Plus, there's the small fact that Simone is being charged with treason by the witch nation, and there's somebody out to get her AND her mother has been keeping some important facts about her father from her. Basically, I felt that WICKED BURN suffered from an overabundance of conflict. Even without the whole possible assassins after her and the weird parentage issues, the book would have been fine. Throwing that on the fire just made it a whole lot more complicated and annoyingly busy.
While we're obviously supposed to believe that Nick and Simone love each other already, she's just fighting the inevitable, we don't see the very beginning of the relationship - only a brief flashback of Nick in the prologue. So we're not given their whole background, only told about it, and that can make it a little difficult to believe some of the stuff that happens (especially given Nick has been gone from Simone's life for so long). However, Zanetti makes up for it by making the scenes between Nick and Simone smoking hot, even if they have questionable timing in some situations. I definitely believed there was something between them, even if it was only lust.
All in all, WICKED BURN satisfied my cravings for more of Simone and Nick that I got from reading the first book in the Realm Enforcers series. The two of them were practically sizzling with attraction and lust and diving into them trying to work that out was super fun. Though the other conflicts in the book provided additional entertainment, at times they made the story a bit confusing, but overall, it was a good, suspenseful romance that will fulfill readers' curiosity about this couple and desire to read more about the world.Series Titles:
