The woman tensed. As anger and fear ricocheted across her face, her eyes changed from red to green to brown in a dizzying display like nothing he'd ever seen.
Every instinct in Angelo's body screamed at him to lunge for his weapon. Instead he set his feet for impact, blocking her slashing claws. Unbelievably, after a few moments of struggling, she went still, all the fight gone...
Minka isn't sure she should trust the sexy Special Forces soldier who found her. Subjected to horrors, on the run from scientists set on locking her in a cage, Minka is terrified of the monster she's becoming...and somehow, Angelo is the only one who can calm the beast inside her and make her feel safe.
But can she trust the way he makes her feel when she's not even sure she can trust herself?
HER FIERCE WARRIOR packs a mighty punch as a suspenseful paranormal romance. The previous three books in this series are pretty brutal in their violence and intensity and while that aspect is toned down a bit in this story it's still there especially in the first scene when we meet Minka and Angelo. The overarching plot revolving around creating shifters in a lab and Angelo's team attempting to bring down the scientists/organization doing the testing is a bit complex but HER FIERCE WARRIOR can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed the revelations of the testing and watching more layers unravel in the wider conspiracy that looms over these books.
The central characters, Minka and Angelo were fully realized and compelling characters with really unique backstories. I liked how Minka slowly learned more about and got more comfortable with her new life as the story progresses. One issue I did have with their relationship was Minka's utter dependence on Angelo. Granted the moments right after she is rescued make sense for her to be a touch clingy and out of sorts. After the initial shock of being rescued she continues with obsessively needing to be touching Angelo or in his lap. I understand that they have an instant connection but she just seems so weak and not just because of the trauma of what was done to her in the lab. Was her behavior supposed to be PTSD or their bond? Either way it rubbed me the wrong way in how it was presented. Eventually she does show some moments of action in the midst of her persistent inaction. Her beast is pretty frightening and rage filled.
Issues with characterization aside HER FIERCE WARRIOR is a fun, suspenseful paranormal romance. I love paranormal romances that have a feel of other book genres I love. X-Ops books are heavy on the thriller/suspense for a paranormal romance.Series Titles:
