If Betsy Taylor has learned anything about ruling Hell it’s: 1) she can't do it alone, and 2) she doesn’t have to. She’s got the help of a devoted vampire king, a dateless zombie, an exhausted new mom, an unshowered cop, a bitchy ghost, a kindly dead priest, and her late stepmother (“Go Team Satan!”). But the latest major hurdle in her post-dead life is so big she can’t even see it until it’s on CNN.
Betsy’s father and half-sister Laura (a former Anti-Christ with a grudge) have outed Betsy to the world. It doesn’t take long for the story to become 24-7 headline news. What’s more, people are not only prepared to believe in vampires, they want to kill them. For Betsy, social media has never felt so…unsocial.
Before long the mansion on Summit Avenue is swarming with reporters, would-be vampire/zombie killers, and desperate emos begging to be turned. Betsy has been forced into the unenviable role as the reluctant face of the vampire nation. All she knows is, she has to look good—this is hi-def!—and stay true to who she is. H8ers be damned.
UNDEAD AND UNFORGIVEN is yet another wild and crazy entry in the hilarious and busy Undead series. This being the second last book in the series means there is really no slowing down for a breath in the story. I loved every crazy page of this book and I really want to know just where this story is going and how it's going to end because I haven't a clue. With some books I may count that as a negative but there's just so much gosh darn charm and silliness that I am simply enjoying the ride wherever it may go. In UNDEAD AND UNFORGIVEN Hell is being run by committee with meetings and agendas. Hell has gotten truly evil under Betsy's rule.
I loved the way Betsy tries to change Hell in her own quirky way with random additions to the rule book and enforcing a Hell mentorship of sorts. Betsy is vain (hello shoe obsession), reluctant to rule, whiny, and snarky. In anyone else I'd use those traits to point out why I don't like a character but Betsy has reasons for her whines and snark and hey everyone needs an obsession. She comes off as so likable and gun-ho about surviving and helping her friends that I really like her. Aside from Betsy who continues to be hellishly awesome and keeps her obsession with shoes strong the cast of secondary characters are around to add some more zany flair to the story. The cast of characters includes a depressed zombie, an Anti-Christ with an evil agenda, a mean priest, weird babies, and various denzions of Hell, and more!
UNDEAD AND UNFORGIVEN sets up the action and craziness that I assume will happen in the last book really well and I can't wait to see how Betsy and friends survive this last adventure.
