Cover Art Coverage

The balance between “killer details” and “killed by too many details” is a deadly one to navigate.  This week we have THE CONCLAVE OF SHADOW expertly blending shadow and color to create mystery, while other titles included so many cool elements the cover itself suffers.

The breathtaking second novel in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Broken Destiny series finds Ivy and Adrian rekindling their alliance – and passion – as the struggle for the fate of the world begins . . .

Conquering a supernatural realm turned out to be easier than getting over a broken heart. But her initial victory has made Ivy a target for revenge, forcing her to reunite with the dangerous – and dangerously sexy – Adrian. Ivy isn’t sure which will be harder: finding the hallowed weapon that will repair the crumbling walls between demon and human realms, or resisting Adrian, who’s decided that come hell or high water, he will make Ivy his.

At first, Adrian tried to resist his feelings for Ivy. Now, determined to break the curse that dooms their love, he’s vowed to save her and to have her. If only he can persuade her to forgive his past sins. But defying destiny—and surrendering to the smoldering desire between them —will bring consequences and sacrifices they never imagined . . .

I have no tolerance for shirtless male book covers anymore, and his chest hair looks rather..spiny. I don’t know what their particular brand of paranormal is, but the cover makes them look like a couple of teenagers who are gossiping about their classmates in the halls.

Julia Says

I’m digging this guy’s vintage Spike vibe, but I don’t know why they’re gazing in slightly different directions.

I like it, but I don’t get it. It’s nice that it fits in with the rest of the series, I’m a fan of continuity across covers, but I get more of a Halo or Call of Duty vibe rather than vampires. Despite the tagline, I wouldn’t expect this book to be paranormal.

Julia Says

I’m sure these colors and helmets pop more in person, but there are so many details the electronic version is a little cluttered.

Megan Says

Having a figure in shadows is a no-brainer for a book called Conclave of Shadow, but I’m not digging the clip-art tiger in the background. If it were a little more distressed, I might buy it as graffitti.

Julia Says

The silhouette totally works for me, the lighting does a great job drawing my eye to details.

For Cassandra Leung, bossing around sea monsters is just the family business. She’s been a Reckoner trainer-in-training ever since she could walk, raising the genetically-engineered beasts to defend ships as they cross the pirate-infested NeoPacific. But when the pirate queen Santa Elena swoops in on Cas’s first solo mission and snatches her from the bloodstained decks, Cas’s dream of being a full-time trainer seems dead in the water.

There’s no time to mourn. Waiting for her on the pirate ship is an unhatched Reckoner pup. Santa Elena wants to take back the seas with a monster of her own, and she needs a proper trainer to do it. She orders Cas to raise the pup, make sure he imprints on her ship, and, when the time comes, teach him to fight for the pirates. If Cas fails, her blood will be the next to paint the sea.

But Cas has fought pirates her entire life. And she’s not about to stop.

Megan Says

I like the imagery, but it’s too busy. The girl with the curious power gauntlets and the multicolored storm are enough – the big monster eye is a distraction.

Julia Says

The individual elements of this cover are great (the dragon eye juxtaposed with the stars would have been cool).  Everything is piled on top of each other, however, making the overall effect one of amateur clutter.

Experience the epic love story of OBSIDIAN as told by its hero, Daemon Black…

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can’t stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.

Falling for Katy—a human—won’t just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen…

Megan Says

Very bland. Nothing remotely supernatural about this, but at least he’s got his clothes on.

Julia Says

This cover matches the series, but that’s not saying much.  This whole series aesthetic seems to be bad tween clip art…

Though I’m not sure what this cover really says about the book, it’s eye-catching and dramatic, so that I’d at least be interested in picking it up to read the blurb.

Julia Says

I like the details they chose to highlight with color, this cover really pops.

Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is back in the tenth installment of Darynda Jones’ New York Times bestselling paranormal series.

Part-time PI and full-time grim reaper, Charley Davidson has asked a lot of questions throughout her life: Why can I see dead people? Who is the hot supernatural entity following me? How do I get gum out of my sister’s hair before she wakes up? But, “How do I trap not one god, but three?” was never among them. Until now. And since those gods are on earth to kill her daughter, she has little choice but to track them down, trap them, and cast them from this dimension.

But one of them stole her heart a very long time ago. Can a god of absolute death and destruction change his omniscient spots, or will his allegiance lie with his brothers?

Those are just some of the questions Charley must answer, and quick. Add to that a homeless girl on the run for her life, a man who’s been framed for murdering a woman who is still very much alive, and a pendant made from god glass that has the entire supernatural world in an uproar, Charley has her hands full. If she can manage to take care of the whole world-destroying-gods thing, we’re saved. If not, well…

The cover art and its tone seem completely at odds with that title, making it too discordant for my tastes. As compared with the other books in the series, though, it’s pretty cute.

Julia Says

Not a lot of detail on these covers but the wine charms are cute.

Megan Says

Oh, jeez, a headless naked torso *and* terrible sexual innuendo? The only interesting thing about this is that it features gargoyles rather than werewolves.

Julia Says

The cityscape with gargoyle is theme appropriate, but the lighting in this sky seems sort of photoshop bland.

Megan Says

Again, nothing supernatural about this cover, and some very questionable Photoshop. The girl gives the impression of looking in two directions at once.

Julia Says

The cheesy title arrangement doesn’t do anything to elevate this daytime television couple beyond boring.

Megan Says

Nope. Boo. These paranormal romance covers aren’t even trying. They know their audience doesn’t really care about the front – unfortunately I expect it’s a turn-off for those who might actually enjoy the prose inside. Or not.
