The “smoldering heat, epic romance, and awesome action” of Nalini Singh’s New York Times bestselling series continues as two Arrows find themselves caught in a chilling conspiracy that spans all three races…

Awakening wounded in a darkened cell, their psychic abilities blocked, Aden and Zaira know they must escape. But when the lethal soldiers break free from their mysterious prison, they find themselves in a harsh, inhospitable landscape far from civilization. Their only hope for survival is to make it to the hidden home of a predatory changeling pack that doesn’t welcome outsiders.

And they must survive. A shadowy enemy has put a target on the back of the Arrow squad, an enemy that cannot be permitted to succeed in its deadly campaign. Aden will cross any line to keep his people safe for this new future, where even an assassin might have hope of a life beyond blood and death and pain. Zaira has no such hope. She knows she’s too damaged to return from the abyss. Her driving goal is to protect Aden, protect the only person who has ever come back for her no matter what.

This time, even Aden’s passionate determination may not be enough—because the emotionless chill of Silence existed for a reason. For the violent, and the insane, and the irreparably broken…like Zaira.

For quite awhile the Arrows have been a group of characters who I've been interested in learning more about as I've read the Psy-Changling series. It was really neat seeing the interior lives of the Arrows. There are so many times where my heart swelled in SHARDS OF HOPE especially at the scenes with the Arrow children. Aden, one of the Arrows who has been 'hanging' around the series for a few books now is finally given a story in SHARDS OF HOPE and it's a story filled with sadness, pain, loneliness, and as the title aptly says shards of hope. As a result of his upbringing he is sort of a mystery as he hides who he is so well. I spent most of this book trying to unwrap the enigma that is Aden and just who he is a person. I am consistently amazed by just how much torture and trauma these characters can be put though. Each Psy character's back story seems to just up the ante in the sadism the Psy seem to be prone to especially towards their children.

Zaira does not escape the fate of horrible childhoods; a childhood experience that leads her to thinking she is a monster. I really enjoyed the dance Aden and Zaira make as their relationship grows. The fact that she experienced such a trauma in her past made it all the more touching when she is finally able to see that she is worth being loved by Aden. Their relationship and personal growth is really sweet to see evolve.

The plot revolves around Zaira and Aden trying to find out who kidnapped them in the first place and in their search we get to see most of the major players and characters from the previous books. The pacing is as usual with a Psy-Changling book is thrilling and fast. There is A LOT going on in this book and further developments that could lead to some interesting developments in the future books. I always leave one of these books with a yearning to know more and SHARDS OF HOPE continues that feeling with lovable and passionate characters. That's why I am hooked on this series and can't wait until the next one.
