When Rafael Villar, Lord Vampire of London, stumbles upon a woman in the cemetery, he believes he’s found a vampire hunter—not the beautiful, intelligent stranger she proves to be.
Cassandra Burton is enthralled by the scarred, disfigured vampire who took her prisoner. The aspiring physician was robbing graves to pursue her studies—and he might turn out to be her greatest subject yet. So they form a bargain: one kiss for every experiment. As their passion grows and Rafe begins to heal, only one question remains: can Cassandra see the man beyond the monster?
The least historical feeling of the Scandals With Bite series, BITE AT FIRST SIGHT has all the hallmarks of a good paranormal romance novel. It's got some hot sexual tension, some good old hidden feelings of love, and some supernatural drama, as well.
Since most of the relationship between Cassandra and Rafe takes place while she is his prisoner, BITE AT FIRST SIGHT feels quite different than most historical romance novels. You'll find very few descriptions of gowns and flirtatious meetings on balconies at balls, instead for the most part you'll find moments where Cassandra is marveling over Rafe's shirtless chest as she works to fix his crippled arm. Also as a result of the static location, I felt that all of the relationships and characters were more developed, since there was no need to for description of locales or much world-building (having been done mostly in previous books).
It takes quite a bit to redeem a character like Rafe, especially after he was the opposite of delightful in previous books. Then, he starts BITE AT FIRST SIGHT by essentially kidnapping Cassandra and ruining her reputation. To bounce back from all that takes a lot, but luckily Rafe has it in him. He somehow manages to be the consummate gentleman even when he's responsible for helping Cassandra undress, and he sleeps in the same bedchamber, to keep her from escaping. The little sparks that sizzle into flames between them helps the reader overlook some things, as well. It helps that Cassandra is such a perfect match for Rafe, how she, as much as he wants to protect her, wants to protect him, from her peers and from cruelty because of his looks.
All in all, BITE AT FIRST SIGHT may be my favorite Scandals With Bite book yet! Here's hoping they keep getting better from here!Series Titles:
