Susannah Scott’s Top 10 Real Life “Unusuals”
Thank you All Thing UF for having me on today to celebrate the release on my latest dragon shifter book, Dragon Her Back!
I’ve been thinking about the reasons I love the paranormal romance genre, and it has to be the idiosyncrasies of all the out-of-the-box creatures. We all know the vamps, and werewolves, and dragon-shifters. The other day my kids and I watched a discovery channel line-up of some “real-life” paranormal creatures.
Check these out unusual “real life” unusuals!
10. The Mothman
This man-bodied creature has red eyes and wings and lived in Point Pleasant, W.V.
9. The Dover Demon
This creature lives in the woods and likes teens, not in a good way. He is 4-foot-tall, with a pot belly, long creepy fingers, orange eyes, and no nose or mouth. Ick.
8. The Minnesota Lake Monster “Pepie”
This monster swims in Lake Pepin and is large and serpent-like. Ralph Samuelson, the inventor of water skiing, is said to have been inspired by watching Pepie skim along the water.
7. The Loveland Frog “Frogman”
Frogman hops around the rivers and roads in Loveland, Ohio. He is 4-foot-tall, but otherwise looks like a frog. Interestingly, Frogman is known for playing pranks on police officers.
6. The Skunk Ape (you can’t make this stuff up!)
The Skunk Ape is 7-feet-tall, looks like a primate, smells like garbage and lives in the Florida Everglades. Seriously, google it, I’m not making this stuff up!
5. The Jersey Devil
Lives in the Pine Barrens in south New Jersey. With his horse head, bat wings, and cloven feet, reports say he runs through the woods at night shrieking and breathing fire. He is also a bit of a peeping-Tom and chicken-snatcher. Man’s gotta meet his basic needs!
4. Loch Ness Monster
Probably the best known on the list, the famous Scottish water-creature who locals call Nessie.
3. Emperor Justinian I
Ahh! A shape-shifter, my favorite! “Justinian was named emperor in 527 and ruled successfully for several decades… He reportedly had a darker side, as well. A monk declared that he had seen “The King of Devils” in Justinian’s place and did not intend to seek aid from such a demon .
2. The Enfield Poltergeist
This northern London malevolent ghost attacked people by throwing and taking objects.
1. The Bell Witch
In 1800 Tennesse in the 1800s, a farmer saw a dog-bodied creature with the head of a rabbit, he shot the animal and the violent witchings began. Apparently, General Andrew Jackson, even investigated. Legend suggests it was the spirit of Kate Batts, who had threatened to haunt Bell because he had cheated her—my kind of lady!

In fact, when it comes to the stunning Mei Chen, hostility might be a better word. Which makes things even harder for Darius, since Mei is his dragon mate. Without her, his dragon form is fading fast…and once lost, will be gone forever.
Mei can’t deny the fierce chemistry that simmers between them. If Darius were ever to discover who―or rather, what―she really is, she wouldn’t just lose him, but her place with the dragonshifters.
