Annith has watched her gifted sisters at the convent come and go, carrying out their dark dealings in the name of St. Mortain, patiently awaiting her own turn to serve Death. But her worst fears are realized when she discovers she is being groomed by the abbess as a Seeress, to be forever sequestered in the rock and stone womb of the convent. Feeling sorely betrayed, Annith decides to strike out on her own.

She has spent her whole life training to be an assassin. Just because the convent has changed its mind doesn't mean she has...

Though it started out a bit slowly, MORTAL HEART was an excellent series conclusion to the His Fair Assassin trilogy. With the usual politics, action and intrigue that we've come to expect from the trilogy, MORTAL HEART offers an ending that should satisfy readers who've followed the characters from GRAVE MERCY.

Having skipped DARK TRIUMPH, I was a little nervous starting MORTAL HEART. I was concerned that I'd be lost, having missed a bunch of action in book two. Luckily, MORTAL HEART stands on its own, and for readers who aren't familiar with the series, there is still enough background information to pull them in and get them interested. My one complaint is that MORTAL HEART starts out a bit slowly, so it takes a while to get drawn in. If you manage to get over the slow section though, this is a book you won't want to put down.

MORTAL HEART tackles the mystery of Annith's origins, and does an excellent job. The mysteries throughout the book are slowly revealed, and I have a feeling it's the type of book where if you went back and re-read it, all the pieces would fall into place as you're reading. It definitely wasn't predictable though, so no worries in that regard. The romance between Annith and the hero is sweet and gave me the good butterflies as I was reading- it was well written and lovely.

While I may not go back and re-read MORTAL HEART, I definitely am going to pick up DARK TRIUMPH, since I've been dragged back to this engaging world. I'm sad to see the trilogy end, but glad I still have a little bit more to keep me occupied.
