This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.
Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian . . . Lily's other self in this alternate universe.
What makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.
Wow. Just. Wow. It’s not often I’m rendered speechless, but TRIAL BY FIRE has me truly hunting for words to describe it. After the last book left me floundering in a wholly different world, this one took me in and let me experience it. And I can’t wait to return to it for the next book.
TRIAL BY FIRE is a mix of both alternate and parallel universe elements. Lily’s world is ours, with our history. The one she’s brought to by her alternate self, Lillian, is the result of one simple decision – a decision to burn the witches during the Salem Witch Trials rather than hanging them. Since the witches in this world gain their power through fire, they were strengthened to the point they came into power that controlled the course of their future and a society wholly dependent on magic.
Lily herself is lovely, a strong-willed heroine, steadfast in her beliefs even as she’s drawn into a world she doesn’t understand. Even her alter ego, Lillian, someone you want to hate but can’t when you find out her true motivation and the lengths she’s willing to go to. Then there’s the loveable Caleb, steady Tristan, and Rowan. Oh, Rowan. I have myself a mighty book-crush on Rowan, even when he behaves like a jerk.
I will warn that TRIAL BY FIRE ends on one hell of a cliffhanger; one that had me rushing to Goodreads to see if there’s a date for the next book (there isn’t – just an “expected date” of 2015.) There might have been a little primal screaming. I can’t wait to go back into Lily’s world, and see what’s in store for her next.Series Titles:
