The Universe of THE DARK WORLD

Cara Lynn Shultz

THE DARK WORLD takes place in a universe that’s parallel to ours; a mirror image—if you’re looking through a pretty warped mirror. (Of course, for its citizens, it’s perfectly normal. Then again, its citizens are legions of demons.) Centuries ago, the Dark World was controlled by warlocks—who are fighting against the royal race of demons in power, Regents, to regain control. And now, they’re closer than they’ve ever been to overthrowing the Regent Queen.

The idea for a spooky alternate universe was born out of the challenges of writing books set in New York City. When the action takes place in the most famous city in the world, you can’t easily invent things to suit your needs. Central Park can’t be moved closer to my heroine’s home. The Hudson River is where it is. So, I began thinking about ways that I could alter New York to support a story. Around this time I was working on a couple of different story ideas. In one, a boy was searching for his sister, who was kidnapped by demons. In another, a girl could speak to ghosts.

And then I had an ocular migraine. I had no idea what was happening. Everything looked fractured. It was as if I were looking through broken glasses. I saw flashes of light in the top right corner of my vision. It was painless—but pretty scary, since I had no idea these things even existed until I went to the doctor (okay, ran, practically screaming, to the doctor) and he reassured me that it wasn’t a brain tumor. I joked with a friend about how it looked like a portal to another dimension—and with my luck, it would be a creepy dimension full of monsters and demons—and boom! The idea for THE DARK WORLD was born.

The Dark World by Cara Lynn Shultz

Paige Kelly is used to weird–in fact, she probably corners the market on weird, considering that her best friend, Dottie, has been dead since the 1950s. But when a fire demon attacks Paige in detention, she has to admit that things have gotten out of her league. Luckily, the cute new boy in school, Logan Bradley, is a practiced demon slayer-and he isn’t fazed by Paige’s propensity to chat with the dead. Suddenly, Paige is smack in the middle of a centuries-old battle between warlocks and demons, learning to fight with a magic sword so that she can defend herself. And if she makes one wrong move, she’ll be pulled into the Dark World, an alternate version of our world that’s overrun by demons-and she might never make it home.
