Interview with Kait Ballenger
ATUF: I’ve made no secret that I can’t wait for Shane’s story – is there a member of the team that’s your favorite or you’ve most enjoyed writing about so far?
Kait: Oooh that’s a difficult question. I can’t say I have a favorite team member, because I love them all in different ways. Out of the three I’ve already written, I would say Jace’s book (Twilight Hunter) was the easiest to write, which probably made it the most fun. I did love writing Damon’s book (Shadow Hunter), especially the letters between him and Tiffany, but I had to write it so fast for deadline it was hard to enjoy the process. David’s book (Immortal Hunter) was extremely difficult to write, but ultimately, the most rewarding in some ways. I’d say if I had to choose one I’m most excited for, it’d be Ash’s book. His story is heartbreaking and I can just tell I’m going to absolutely love writing that book, because I love really tortured heroes. He’s book number four.
Why did you decide to have Damon’s story as the final book, after the prequel focused on him?
I actually positioned Damon as the final book before I knew I was going to write the prequel. I put him there because he’s a hard character to write, so I wanted to avoid his book as long as I could lol. I hadn’t intended to tell that beginning prequel part of his story, but when Harlequin asked me to write a prequel to the series, I knew that untold portion of his backstory had to be the start. I’m glad I told it though, because now he is much easier to write and I’m looking forward to working on that book. I also think that as a character he undergoes the most growth throughout the series, so I think that metamorphosis lends itself well to bringing the series full circle.
How did you pick Rochester, New York as the setting for the Execution Underground series?
At the time I was brainstorming the series, I had a friend from Rochester, who suggested I choose that as the location. My idea originally was NYC, but that tends to be a bit overused in fiction, so Rochester was nearby and has a similar feel in certain aspects.
Where do you get the ideas for the mythology of the EU books? The fae magic is especially intriguing, and also – a were-pig??
Haha! The were-pig just sort of popped into my head. My thought was: ‘why not have all kinds of were-creatures that cause trouble?’ That is all just pure imagination. Some of the mythology from the series is based on actual cultural myths. For example, the Fae being like “earth angels” can be found in some old Irish lore, so I guess it’s equal mix of lesser known lore/legends and imagination.
So far in 2014, what is your favorite book you’ve read (doesn’t have to be published in 2014)?
Divergent by Veronica Roth. With the movies releasing, I had a friend who told me I just had to read the series, so I picked it up and now I’m hooked. I’m pretty sure Four is one of the best YA characters out there. *swoon*
Which hunter of the Rochester EU division would win a game of tag?
That’s a hard question. I think it’d come down to Jace or Damon. I’m not sure who out of the two of them, but they’re the most competitive and they both take their jobs very very seriously.

She writes dark paranormal romance with drool-worthy heroes and kickass heroines as Kait Ballenger, and sassy YA urban fantasy under her maiden name, Kaitlyn Schulz.
When Kait’s not preoccupied with paranormal creepy-crawlies, she can be found slaving over endless amounts of schoolwork or with her nose buried in a book. She lives in Florida with her husband, and doggie-daughter, Sookie (yes, like the heroine in Charlainne Harris’ books), and two mischievous kittens, Elliot and Olivia (yes, like the Law and Order characters), near the love and care of her supportive family. Kait believes anything is possible with hard work and dedication. One day, she will be a bestseller and have people name their pets after her characters too.
