Jeaniene’s DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE tidbit:
Destined For An Early Grave was a very emotional book to write. ***Spoilers ahead***It put Cat and Bones through their worst nightmare scenario when it came to their relationship. For Bones, it was Cat leaving him again to go to Gregor. For Cat, it was believing that Bones had abandoned her to return to his former promiscuous ways. Both Cat and Bones did what they did to save each other, but in the process, they also ended up nearly destroying their relationship. Many issues boiled over in the infamous “piano scene,” such as Cat being forced to confront her last vestiges of prejudice against vampires, and Bones allowing his temper to dictate his actions. Their blow-up might’ve been avoided if they’d been honest with each other a lot earlier about their feelings, but like many couples, Cat and Bones back-burnered their marriage to focus on external issues instead. That rarely works out well in real life, and it didn’t serve Cat and Bones well in DFAEG, either. Their personal problems were also exacerbated by the side effects of the dream-suppressant drug Cat was taking, plus Bones’s inability to tell Cat his plans while Gregor was able to “spy” on them in her sleep.
A popular recurring character also dies in this novel. That was such a tough scene to write, I had to start at the beheading and work my way backward (yes, tears were shed, too). The duel at the end was also gut-wrenching to write because Cat is helpless throughout most of it. As for Gregor, I loathed his character. He was the supernaturally-charged embodiment of a violent domestic abuser (among his other despicable qualities) and I admit to a vindictive feeling of satisfaction when he finally got his just desserts.
Julia: While it seems most readers enjoy the Night Huntress series primarily for Cat and Bones, I find myself less interested in their romance than the paranormal world that surrounds them. In DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE, the supernatural elements really kick things up a notch. While Cat and Bones seem to come with two settings (“Hot” and “Hot Mess”), I found myself genuinely thrilled and surprised by some of the magical twists and turns. And Vlad, dear sweet Vlad. Dare I hope that he has his own HEA on the horizon somewhere?
Kate: Even having read DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE already, I was on tenterhooks the entire book. Gregor is such a fascinating character, because of his strength and his master vampire abilities, and his hot and cold feelings towards Cat (not to say that I’m upset he’s **spoiler alert** dead). And though Bones and Cat drove me insane with their inability to communicate with each other about what was going on, I’m happy that they were able to resolve their differences. I really like Vlad’s friendship with Cat since we’ve not exactly seen her form her own relationships in the vampire world, only those as a result of her affiliation with Bones.
Kristina: I didn’t enjoy Cat and Bones fighting in DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE and I remember being quite frustrated with them on my first read. Luckily they make up and as a result of their fighting we get a Vlad and Cat sleepover! I would read a short story with these two having more sleepovers with pillow fights and movies. Did I mention how much I love Vlad? Also, Cat’s transformation to full vampire was amusing and I laughed at the mention of Cat ‘neck raping’ vampires.
Kate: The scene where Cat meets Marie is one of my absolute favorites ever- especially after she finds out from Bones that it went so well after she thought it went terribly. And the sleeping in the same bed moment with Vlad and Cat seemed so sweet.
Kristina: I am going to ditto Kate’s favorite scenes because both were awesome in their own ways.
