Nina Croft’s Top 10 Favorite Urban Fantasy Characters

I’ve recently released Bittersweet Magic, book two in my series The Order. The series is a combination of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. One of the things I love about the genres is the infinite variety of characters. So here are my top 10 favorite urban fantasy characters and why I love them so much.

In no particular order (but it’s maybe no coincidence that Spike occurred to me first!):

From the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris and the TV show, True Blood. This one is self-explantory – just look at the pic!

Mercy Thompson

From the books by Patricia Briggs. She’s such a strong heroine.

Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson #7)

From Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake books – who can resist a French accent…ma petite…

from Buffy the Vampire Slayer – that Buffy certainly had good taste in vampires!

From Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice. The first vampire I fell in love with.

From JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood – I loved his inner dragon.

Jericho Barrons

From Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. This quote explains it all:

“Being touched by Jericho Barrons with kindness makes you feel like you must be the most special person in the world. It’s like walking up to the biggest, most savage lion in the jungle, lying down, placing your head it its mouth and, rather than taking your life, it licks you and purrs.”
― Karen Marie Moning, Bloodfever

Harry Dresden

from Jim Butcher’s series, The Dresden files, because he’s cool and is a wizard (and I think I was coming across as a vampire groupie – not that I’m denying it) and he has a great dog.

From the TV series, Being Human – Yet another vampire, but I thought I’d better include a British show – and I loved this one.

From Buffy the Vampire Hunter. For me, Spike is the ultimate bad boy. And I actually have a cat called Spike!

Nina Croft grew up in the north of England. After training as an accountant, she spent four years working as a volunteer in Zambia, which left her with a love of the sun and a dislike of 9-5 work. She then spent a number of years mixing travel (whenever possible) with work (whenever necessary) but has now settled down to a life of writing and picking almonds on a remote farm in the mountains of southern Spain.
Nina writes all sorts of romance often mixing in elements of the paranormal and science fiction.

Roz has been indebted to the demon Asmodai for five hundred years, and her freedom is just around the corner. All she has to do is complete one last task for him—obtain a key that had been hidden in a church centuries ago.

Piers, the Head of the Order and an ancient vampire, is intrigued by the woman who comes to him for help. She’s beautiful and seemingly kind, but she’s hiding something. And he’ll find out who she is and what she really wants once he uses his power to get inside her head. But Piers has no idea that Roz is immune to his mind-control…or that he is simply a pawn in her dangerous mission for freedom.

  1. Vicki

I can’t pick just one…I have a three way tie between Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson Hauptman, Diana Rowland’s Kara Gillian and Dianne Sylvan’s Miranda Gray-Solomon. Each character fits perfectly at differents times.

  2. Ezinwanyi

My favorite PNR character is Vishous & Butch from Black Dagger Brotherhood.
A close second is Tegan from Midnight Breeds.
    Third is Gideon from Nightwalkers
And my honorable mention is Thanatos from Lord of the Deliverance

    My ladies:
Genevieve “Gin” Blanco from Elemental Assassin
    Mercy Thompson
Pam from Sookie Stackhouse series (that chick deserved her own series)

  3. Jasmyn

I totally crushed on Dresden when I read the books – I love his attitude. Mercy Thompson is another favorite, I wish I had more of that series on my self.

  4. Janie McGaugh

Spike is my favorite urban fantasy/paranormal character. Kate Daniels is an addition I’d make to your list.

  5. Nina Croft

There are a lot of my favorites here, but also a few new ones that I might have to go check out!

  6. Shelley D

I love the characters from Shelly Laurenston’s books – especially the bears. So far I think Bo has been my favorite. I also love Mercy Thompson and Kate Daniels.

  7. Michele A

it’s a tie right now between Cat from the Night Huntress series and Merit from Chicagoland Vampires

  8. Geraldine Tan

I love Bones from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress Novel!
Fell in love with him since the first page.
