Churchwitch Chess Putnam has seen, and banished, her share of ghosts, but not of the Christmas Past variety–the holiday has been illegal since the Church of Real Truth defeated the undead and took control of the world in 1997. Yet when she and her boyfriend, Terrible, make a trip to an abandoned auto junkyard, they find more than the rusted auto parts and spare tires they’d bargained for. They also run across a creepy Miss Havisham-type hell-bent on reuniting with her long-dead husband just in time for Christmas–even if it means taking Chess and Terrible down with her into the City of Eternity…
If Chess and Terrible don’t manage to keep these ghosts in the past, they won’t have a future…
A gorgeous mix of ghost story and love story, CLOSE TO YOU is Christmas Eve as only Stacia Kane can write it. This glimpse of Chess and Terrible doing what they do best, throwing off sparks and kicking butt, was entertaining from start to finish.
Under normal circumstances, I avoid Christmas novellas like the plague. One set in the Downside Ghosts world, with all it’s sharp edges and seedy characters, had me hoping for more than the usual cameos and rushed romances. I wasn’t disappointed. CLOSE TO YOU has a satisfying, well paced plot, alongside tender, sexy moments between Chess and Terrible. Seeing these two together made me fall in love with them all over again (and bump a Downside Ghosts re-read to the top of my to do list). The chemistry between these two loveable and broken souls is undeniable, despite the dread and doom that swirls around them. I share every one of Chess’s fears that she’ll screw this up, that she’ll damage and lose the one thing in her life worth having, but I also share her hope. That intractable passion that keeps both of us coming back for more.
I both anticipate and dread every visit to the Downside Ghosts world, and this little story was the perfect taste to bring me back for more. Short and sweet, CLOSE TO YOU is a great little glimpse of the Downside Ghosts world.
