Adrian Phoenix’s Top 10 Top 10 Shows on My DVR
I enjoy watching good TV, love checking out new shows, and with DVR technology, it’s sooooo easy to record, well, everything. The other day, I was looking at my recorded programming and realized I would never have the time to watch each show, not if I planned to write on a regular basis and not if I hoped to avoid becoming a true couch potato. LOL.
It also dawned on me that there were shows that I watched immediately, eager to see what happens next and to who, and that there were shows I put off until I had nothing else to watch. No real excitement there, just a sense of duty. “Well, I’ve come this far, might as well finish the season.” What the . . . ? Why am I watching shows that don’t excite me? Why am I watching shows that I don’t look forward to?
A damned good question. Time is too short. Too valuable. So I started ruthlessly winnowing timers. Revolution-gone. Vampire Diaries-gone (to be fair, I used to enjoy this one, but it faded during the last season). Cold Justice-gone (we hardly knew ye). Super Fun Night-gone (one episode). Defiance-gone (although it had good moments, just not good enough). And so many more. I dropped from 79 timers to 34.
Listed below are the top ten shows on my DVR, the shows that excite me, the shows that I can’t wait to watch. I hope you’ll share your top ten too. 😉
Two words: Alex O’Loughlin. Well, okay, a few more. This is another guilty pleasure. I don’t concern myself with the level of writing (which isn’t bad, isn’t great), I just sit back and enjoy. The chemistry and dialogue between Alex and Scott Caan truly makes the show.
Werewolves in high school. With the show’s expanding supernatural mythology, this has been a lot of fun.
Reenactments of true life ghostly stories. Some of these have scared the daylights out of me. I realize that some are embellished for dramatic effect, but the story at the core is usually terrifying.
I laugh so hard when I watch this, I cry. Here’s the official description:
Drunk History is a weekly, half-hour series where historical reenactments by A-list talent are presented by inebriated storytellers. Based on the award-winning and wildly popular web series, the show follows the drunken and often incoherent narration of our nation’s history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of great actors and comedians, travels from town to town across the country, presenting the rich history that every city in this land, both great and small, has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth of our nation’s history.
Seriously, watch this.
The first season just concluded, but we have a teen who might or might not be a killer (and probably is) who has just been released from juvie after serving a sentence for murdering his aunt and is seeking redemption, friends who are trying to believe in him, others who are afraid/despise/fear him, and a deepening conspiracy. What actually happened on that day five years ago?
Oh. And if I were fifteen again, I’d have Avan Jogia’s pictures pinned to every wall in my room.
America’s Next Top Model
My guilty pleasure–and I love it. And now that they’ve added guys into the mix??? Swoon. I’m in heaven. Thank you, Tyra.
This is going to sound like a recurring theme, but–the writing, the dialogue, the characters. All terrific. Compelling stories set in Wyoming. Plus you have Lou Diamond Phillips as ac regular! You cannot go wrong.
Snappy dialogue (and dialogue I often like to repeat), great writing, characterizations, and performances. (And more fellas easy on the eyes.) This show blends humor and heartbreak in equal, skillful measure. I love this show.
Sons of Anarchy
Outlaw bikers. Violence. Murder and mayhem. Family. Betrayal. Loyalty and loss. Amazing characterization, dialogue, and writing–not to mention the acting. This is MacBeth in an urban setting. Riveting. (And eye candy, plus searing performances, in the lean-muscled form of Charlie Hunnam.)
Brothers fighting back to back against the forces of evil, hunting monsters, a family shattered by darkness and sacrifice, and guided by angels with agendas of their own. What’s not to love?? And the fact that both leads–Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are easy on the eyes is pure cake. 🙂 New season starts October 8th.
As a writer, a person, and a mother, I’ve always believed in following your dreams, following your heart. It’s also important to keep your heart, so I also believe in being prepared for zombie attacks and can’t stress enough the importance of having regular family drills so every member of the household is zombie-ready. One never knows. Make sure the sofa is ready to push in front of the door. Be clear that if a member of the family is on the wrong side of the door when the zombie action goes down. They remain on the wrong side of the door. The greater good, etc.
I live in Springfield, Oregon in a zombie-free home (except when meeting deadlines) with three cats, Amiga, Keats, and Emily and have two sons and three grandchildren and two granddogs. I’m the author of The Maker’s Song and Hoodoo series and short stories (the short stuff usually under Adrian Nikolas Phoenix).
I love to read and see movies, enjoy hiking with my granddog, Cielo, (immortalized in Black Dust Mambo and Black Heart Loa), and hanging out with friends. I also love creepy things and yearn to go on a paranormal investigation one day.

TORN BETWEEN THREE WORLDS–A DANGER TO THEM ALL.
Even as Dante Baptiste’s identity as both True Blood and Fallen ripples throughout New Orleans, his powers are expanding in surprising, devastating directions. Kidnapped, drugged, and lost to his brutal past, the vampire wavers between sanity and breakdown at the hands of his torturers.
Forsaking the FBI she once loved, Heather Wallace has likewise fallen into malevolent hands. As she struggles to reunite with Dante, men of hate and government evil will try to keep them apart. Even as their teammates frantically search for the pair, dark forces continue to gather against the young vampire–and the fates of mortals, nightkind, and the Fallen rest on him regaining control of his shattered psyche before he becomes the terrible, omnipotent Great Destroyer.
