Adrian Phoenix’s Top 10 Top 10 Shows on My DVR

I enjoy watching good TV, love checking out new shows, and with DVR technology, it’s sooooo easy to record, well, everything. The other day, I was looking at my recorded programming and realized I would never have the time to watch each show, not if I planned to write on a regular basis and not if I hoped to avoid becoming a true couch potato. LOL.

It also dawned on me that there were shows that I watched immediately, eager to see what happens next and to who, and that there were shows I put off until I had nothing else to watch. No real excitement there, just a sense of duty. “Well, I’ve come this far, might as well finish the season.” What the . . . ? Why am I watching shows that don’t excite me? Why am I watching shows that I don’t look forward to?

A damned good question. Time is too short. Too valuable. So I started ruthlessly winnowing timers. Revolution-gone. Vampire Diaries-gone (to be fair, I used to enjoy this one, but it faded during the last season). Cold Justice-gone (we hardly knew ye). Super Fun Night-gone (one episode). Defiance-gone (although it had good moments, just not good enough). And so many more. I dropped from 79 timers to 34.

Listed below are the top ten shows on my DVR, the shows that excite me, the shows that I can’t wait to watch. I hope you’ll share your top ten too. 😉

Hawaii Five-O

Two words: Alex O’Loughlin. Well, okay, a few more. This is another guilty pleasure. I don’t concern myself with the level of writing (which isn’t bad, isn’t great), I just sit back and enjoy. The chemistry and dialogue between Alex and Scott Caan truly makes the show.

Teen Wolf

Werewolves in high school. With the show’s expanding supernatural mythology, this has been a lot of fun.

Paranormal Witness

Reenactments of true life ghostly stories. Some of these have scared the daylights out of me. I realize that some are embellished for dramatic effect, but the story at the core is usually terrifying.

Drunk History

I laugh so hard when I watch this, I cry. Here’s the official description:
Drunk History is a weekly, half-hour series where historical reenactments by A-list talent are presented by inebriated storytellers. Based on the award-winning and wildly popular web series, the show follows the drunken and often incoherent narration of our nation’s history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of great actors and comedians, travels from town to town across the country, presenting the rich history that every city in this land, both great and small, has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth of our nation’s history.

Seriously, watch this.

The first season just concluded, but we have a teen who might or might not be a killer (and probably is) who has just been released from juvie after serving a sentence for murdering his aunt and is seeking redemption, friends who are trying to believe in him, others who are afraid/despise/fear him, and a deepening conspiracy. What actually happened on that day five years ago?

Oh. And if I were fifteen again, I’d have Avan Jogia’s pictures pinned to every wall in my room.

America’s Next Top Model

My guilty pleasure–and I love it. And now that they’ve added guys into the mix??? Swoon. I’m in heaven. Thank you, Tyra.

This is going to sound like a recurring theme, but–the writing, the dialogue, the characters. All terrific. Compelling stories set in Wyoming. Plus you have Lou Diamond Phillips as ac regular! You cannot go wrong.

Snappy dialogue (and dialogue I often like to repeat), great writing, characterizations, and performances. (And more fellas easy on the eyes.) This show blends humor and heartbreak in equal, skillful measure. I love this show.

Sons of Anarchy

Outlaw bikers. Violence. Murder and mayhem. Family. Betrayal. Loyalty and loss. Amazing characterization, dialogue, and writing–not to mention the acting. This is MacBeth in an urban setting. Riveting. (And eye candy, plus searing performances, in the lean-muscled form of Charlie Hunnam.)

Brothers fighting back to back against the forces of evil, hunting monsters, a family shattered by darkness and sacrifice, and guided by angels with agendas of their own. What’s not to love?? And the fact that both leads–Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are easy on the eyes is pure cake. 🙂 New season starts October 8th.

As a writer, a person, and a mother, I’ve always believed in following your dreams, following your heart. It’s also important to keep your heart, so I also believe in being prepared for zombie attacks and can’t stress enough the importance of having regular family drills so every member of the household is zombie-ready. One never knows. Make sure the sofa is ready to push in front of the door. Be clear that if a member of the family is on the wrong side of the door when the zombie action goes down. They remain on the wrong side of the door. The greater good, etc.

I live in Springfield, Oregon in a zombie-free home (except when meeting deadlines) with three cats, Amiga, Keats, and Emily and have two sons and three grandchildren and two granddogs. I’m the author of The Maker’s Song and Hoodoo series and short stories (the short stuff usually under Adrian Nikolas Phoenix).

I love to read and see movies, enjoy hiking with my granddog, Cielo, (immortalized in Black Dust Mambo and Black Heart Loa), and hanging out with friends. I also love creepy things and yearn to go on a paranormal investigation one day.

Even as Dante Baptiste’s identity as both True Blood and Fallen ripples throughout New Orleans, his powers are expanding in surprising, devastating directions. Kidnapped, drugged, and lost to his brutal past, the vampire wavers between sanity and breakdown at the hands of his torturers.

Forsaking the FBI she once loved, Heather Wallace has likewise fallen into malevolent hands. As she struggles to reunite with Dante, men of hate and government evil will try to keep them apart. Even as their teammates frantically search for the pair, dark forces continue to gather against the young vampire–and the fates of mortals, nightkind, and the Fallen rest on him regaining control of his shattered psyche before he becomes the terrible, omnipotent Great Destroyer.

I don’t have a DVR but if I did my top shows would be Doctor Who, Once Upon a Time, Supernatural (though I’m nowhere near up to the recent seasons :P) and Agents of SHIELD (though I haven’t actually seen an episode yet)! I don’t watch all that much new TV actually..

  2. Holly Letson

Nothing. I cleared it the other day. There was a bunch of *Storage Wars* episodes on there. My parents set that, I believe.

I honestly don’t watch much TV or movies.

  3. Rhonda Beyer

My DVR has lots of Haven, Supernatural, any and every ghost show. Thanks for the giveaway I love the Makers Song Series!

Agents of SHIELD, Duck Dynasty, Longmire, Haven, NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, and many, many more.

  5. Janie McGaugh

I don’t have a DVR, but I can record shows on my computer! Many times, I’ll watch one thing and record another. The last couple of weeks, I’ve recorded Sleepy Hollow, Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Once Upon a Time.

  6. erinf1

  7. Jasmyn

ANTM is a guilty pleasure of mine as well – I get slack from the BF about watching it all the time.

  8. Amber D

We just lost our DVR 🙁 and I miss it so much. I always had ANTM, all the singing shows (The Voice, X-Factor, American Idol), Grimm, Once Upon a Time, The Simpsons, The Glades, and probably more that I don’t want to admit to.

  9. CJ Burright

I don’t do DVR, but I have my must-not-miss shows. Supernatural and Justified are on there 🙂 as are True Blood and Game of Thrones. My guilty pleasure: The Bachelor/Bachelorette. Yeah, I just confessed it online.

  10. Maureen

No DVR, but Hulu is a wonderful thing! I generally use it to watch reality-show marathons (like Masterchef) once the season ends.

  11. Victoria Zumbrum

Sleepy Hollow, Law Order SVU, Beauty and the Beast, The Dome. Thanks for the giveaway.

  12. Chris Bails

I don’t have a DVR, but this is what I watch, or try to watch. If not I catch later on Internet. Sleepy Hallow, Supernatural, Betrayal, Brooklyn 99, Sons of Anarchy, True Blood, & Game of Thrones.

  13. Marie-Claude

I love Supernatural, Criminal Minds, Game of Thrones and Avatar : The Legend of Korra.

  14. Ashley Martinez

I love Supernatural! I wish I had time to watch some of the new shows coming out. I would like to see Once Upon a Time, the Alice in Wonderland show that’s coming out and the Witches of East End. I love the paranormal and find it fascinating. Thanks for the giveaway chance!

  15. Vicki Webster

I record on my DVR Bones, Castle, Sleepy Hollow, Agents of Sheild, How I Met Your Mother, NCIS, Cold Justice, Face Off, Rizzoli & Isles, Criminal Minds, Big Bang Theory, Crazy Ones & Cities of the Underworld. Sadly, my DVR won’t hold much and I can’t keep some episodes to re-watch.

  16. miki

no dvr i just watch the episodes when they are on tv with some preferences yes but to be honest this yeaérs i did prefer to read than staying in front of teh tv ( i love ” les enquêtes de Murdoch”, “criminal minds” “hawai 5-0” but if i miss once it’s really nothing^^

  17. Cyrene

I also love Hawaii Five-O, been a fan of Alex O’Loughlin forever. Also on my DVR is Revolution, Sleepy Hollow, The Voice and Face-off.

  18. Bethany C.

A better question would be ‘what isn’t on your dvr?’ Shorter list. I have a ton of favorite shows, but so far I think the best premiere from this fall was Scandal. It’s ridonkulous. And if I ever went out on a Friday night like everyone else and wasn’t home to watch Haven, I would dvr that- I love that show and rave about it to anyone that will listen.

  19. Michelle

No DVR and with a new baby I’m not watching much 🙂 Really enjoyed Hannibal and hoping that will be back!

  20. Tina B

Wow! I have so many on my DVR!
I have had to whittle down my shows as well. I was spending time watching shows when all I wanted to do was read.
I am currently watching The Tomorrow People. Interesting so far.
One of my favorites are Beauty and the Beast!
Here are a few more of the shows that I watch (when I get time) ~ Big Bang Theory, Dads, Hawaii Five-0, Arrow, Chicago Fire, Haven, New Girl, The Mindy Project and Sleepy Hollow. That is just some. Lol. I cannot wait for The Walking Dead to start this week!! 🙂
I have SOA on my list to watch, but can’t decide if I want to watch it now or wait until 50 Shades comes out so that I have a fresh view of the actor playing Christina Grey. Lol.

Thank you for sharing and for the fabulous giveaway!

  21. Barbara Elness

Oh my gosh, I have a ton of stuff on my DVR, quite a few episodes of Bones, Warehouse 13, Haven and Burn Notice that I have to catch up on. Current episodes of Castle, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., NCIS, NCIS LA, Chicago Fire, Grey’s Anatomy, Elementary, Revolution, and Sleepy Hollow, to name just a few. 😀 Just watched Tomorrow People tonight, it’s a definite keeper.

  22. Kai W.

I don’t have a DVR so I HULU just to catch up on shows that air at the same time as the other show. Sleepy Hollow does aired the same episode twice on TV. It will be a problem when GRIMM starts on October 25.

  23. Adrian Phoenix

    That’s so cool, Mary!

Thanks so much to each of you for participating! Appreciate it! I wish y’all the best of luck in the giveaway!

  24. Tamlyn

Echoing the ‘don’t have one…’ but what I’m watching at the moment is Agents of SHIELD and Gruen Planet – and naturally, as I only watch two things, they’re on the same night in the same time slot.

  25. Linda K.

My DVR gets quite the workout as well. Supernatural, Nashville, Revenge, Sleepy Hollow, Hart of Dixie, Teen Wolf, Longmire, Scandal, Haven, Glee, Graceland, and Marvel’s Agents of Shield are my must watch shows.

  26. Michele A

My DVD has a variety of shows: The Voice, X-Factor, Dancing with the Stars as well as Gray’s Anatomy, Castle, Blacklist, Once Upon a Time, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Criminal Minds, and Sleepy Hollow. Dracula will be on the list once it starts its season. IF I could get the CW, it would also have Arrow, Nikita, The Vampire Diaries, the Originals, and Reign (when it comes out).

  27. Stephanie F.

I have Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, The Middle and Modern Family on my DVR. Love the series. It’s such a great mix of dark and sexy.

  28. Natasha

American Horror Story Coven, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Sleepy Hollow, and Witches of East End.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  29. Aly P

The list is very long 😀 Criminal Minds, NCIS, NCIS LA, Castle, Sherlock Holems, Downton Abbey, Elementary, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals… some of the few

  30. Robi

On my DVR there is Haven and grim at the moment.
    Thank you for the giveaway.

  31. Elizabeth Gray

I don’t watch as much tv as I used to, but I have several crime shows such as 48 hours, dateline, Lt. Joe Kenda: homicide Hunter. Oh, and Buffy, The Vampire Killer. Love several of the tv shows on your list like Hawaii Five-O. Need to check out the others.

    Love The Maker’s Song series.

  32. Heather Wohltman

I DVD the shows Sleepy Hollow, Once Upon A Time In Wonderland, and Supernatural. I try to catch things when they air but am not usually that lucky.

  33. donnas

Sleepy Hollow, American Horror Story, Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother.
