Cover Art Coverage

For the first time in a long time, we have an all ATUF panel for our cover art coverage.  My favorite, alliterative trio, Kate, Chris, and Kristina, each fell in love with different covers this week, but there were several unanimous thumbs down.  Which covers did you fall in love with this week?

Kate Says

Is it just me or does his skin look a little like it’s going to crack and fall off? But I do like the genie lamp.

Chris Says

The guy looks like he’s about to die from scurvy. AFAIK this isn’t a book about pirates so that’s probably not what they were going for.

Kristina Says

I like the poses and the genie lamp is a nice touch.

Wicked as They Come (Blud, #1)Wicked as She Wants (Blud, #2)

A contortionist and a rakish brigand navigate the cabarets of Paris to rescue a girl taken by slavers in the third steampunk-tinged romance of the Blud series.

Life as a contortionist in Criminy’s Clockwork Caravan should be the height of exotic adventure, but for Demi Ward, it’s total dullsville. Until her best friend, Cherie, is stolen by slavers outside of Paris, and Demi is determined to find her.

On the run from his own past, Vale Hildebrand, a dashing rogue of a highwayman, hides Demi from the slavers…but why? He pledges to help her explore the glittering cabarets of Paris to find her friend, but much to Vale’s frustration, Demi soon attracts a host of wealthy admirers. The pleasures of music, blood, and absinthe could turn anyone’s head, and it would be all too easy to accept Cherie’s disappearance as inevitable—but with Vale’s ferocious will and Demi’s drive to find her friend, they soon have a lead on a depraved society of Parisian notables with a taste for beautiful lost girls. Can Demi wind her way through the seedy underbelly of Paris and save her best friend before she, too, is lost?

To me, this looks like a photo you take at one of those places where you get all dressed up in a costume and get a copy in black and white. Plus, when it’s in thumbnail size, you can’t see any details and the title is kind of small.

Chris Says

I want to like this cover. Normally if a cover has steampunk elements I give it a thumbs up. I can’t do it with this one because it is just horrid. What’s up with the modern haircuts on both of the models?

Kristina Says

I usually love these steampunk covers but this one looks too costumey. I agree with Kate on it looking like one of those old time photos you pose for at amusement parks.

From the author of Sins of the Angels and Sins of the Son comes the newest novel in the “electric, thrilling and extremely intelligent” (Ex Libris) Grigori Legacy series.

Heaven and Hell are on the brink of war as Lucifer builds his Nephilim army and waits for his new agenda to become a reality — that of having a Nephilimchild of his own bloodline to lead his forces to cataclysmic victory.

With rumors of the pending war rampant on Earth, Alex fights to save humanity from its own panic – leaving little time for her fledgling
relationship with Seth, the man with heavenly origins who has captured her heart. But when Nephilim children begin to disappear, along with Alex’s own vulnerable niece, the inevitable war between Heaven and Hell becomes as personal as sin.

Heaven has its own plans to fight the coming apocalypse, but first it needs Seth back. Asked to betray the man she loves, Alex must turn for help to the soulmate she thought she’d given up — the Archangel Aramael, who may be her last chance to save her family and humanity from the ashes of Lucifer’s Armageddon.

Kate Says

I guess it is pretty obvious this novel has angels in it. Otherwise I can’t think of much else to say.

Chris Says

I wouldn’t call this cover good or bad. It’s inoffensive in a bland sort of way.

Kristina Says

Talk about symmetry and seriously straight lines. It is interesting how different this cover is from the previous two in the series.

Kate Says

Why is she blue? Is she supposed to be blue? Oh wait, is that just a bad job of color-washing a cover? Why is her hair still blond? SO MANY QUESTIONS.

Chris Says

I don’t know why Kristina and Kate are hating on this cover. I find it delightfully tacky and unrefined.

Kristina Says

Is she supposed to be a rejected blue alien design from an old Star Trek episode? Wait only her face appears blue. That’s why they rejected it from Star Trek! Not a fan of the orange stuff floating around either.

Kate Says

I’m not a huge fan but that could be due to the fact that snakes creep me out. Otherwise, it matches the previous covers- it’s just a lot of dark space.

Chris Says

I don’t usually like mostly black covers, but the starkness of the image and the gold of the snake and font is used to good effect.

Kristina Says

I like the snake and the snake skin pattern on the title font. I had to stare at this for awhile to figure out that that is the top of the snake’s head and the rest is in shadow.

Kate Says

So much better than the first one (CIRCLE OF FIRE) which I totally hate in a previous Cover Art Coverage. I love the blue, the smokiness and the panther. It’s super cool.

Chris Says

Always a pleasure to see female characters in natural looking poses. The cool blue smoke in the background doesn’t hurt either.

Kristina Says

The title is awesome sounding. The actual cover is decent with the smoke and the panther? The covers appear to be different on Amazon and Goodreads. The GR one gets a thumbs down….for bad imitation of the MGM lion logo.

Meanwhile, enemies old and new are gathering. Scargrave’s brutal Chantress-hunter has become King Henry’s closest advisor. Lucy’s beloved Nat has fallen out of favor and is shunned by his colleagues; their romance means trouble for both of them. Worst of all, something goes wrong with Lucy’s magic. I love the font, but I don’t understand why it looks like it is raining but she is not getting rained on, just the guy in the background.

Chris Says

Great font, great background. Remove the model photos and this would be a very good cover.

Kristina Says

I love the font as well but the models are kind of getting in the way of a nice cover.

This is my favorite in the series so far! There is so much detail but it still is a great cohesive cover.

Chris Says

I don’t think Joey Hi-Fi could create a bad cover if he tried. This is a fantastic series and another spectacular cover from Joey.

Hate the title. Love the cover. The red haired girl is super cool looking. Is that a good reason for liking a cover?

Chris Says

Whoa. Appropriately dressed models in a winter setting. That alone gets it a thumbs up from me. Not too crazy about the title though. Blood2Blood? Really?

I think liking a cover based on a super cool looking red head is a very good reason to like a cover! Because this is a cool cover and they are fully clothed in practical clothes!!!!

4 Responses to “Cover Art Coverage: 12 New Titles!”

  1. Julie

If you read the Meta Wars series by Kelly Meding, you would think that the cover for Chimera is actually awesome. That is Renee’s story and yes her skin is actually blue. She is a superhero with crazy elastic abilities and has been through hell and back during this series. Can’t wait for her book!
Also loving the cover for The Cormorant!

  2. mdd

“Those are a lot of weird tattoos” “Is her skin supposed to be blue?” One would assume that if you’re working on the largest UF blog around you’d be capable of doing twenty seconds of research. Google for the Hunter Kiss series and literally the first search result turns up Liu’s official site and a quote about the heroine, a “…woman covered in living tattoos that peel off her body at night”.

And as Julie pointed out above, Renee is blue. You may as well be questioning why Mystique is blue on covers from the X-Men comic book series. Again, if you were to shove the title and author into Google you’d know within a matter of seconds that the series is about meta human superheroes and all the covers reflect the powers of the individual featured.

None of this is to suggest you should be liking the covers mentioned, that’s as subjective as all heck (the orange on Chimera is hideous, if you ask me). But collectively your comments this week seem far more ignorant than witty.

  3. Tamlyn

I like the Kerry Arthur cover… but I have to disagree with the natural looking pose part of Chris’ comment!
