Pamela Palmer’s Quinn Lennox on Vamp City from A KISS OF BLOOD
What can I tell you about Vamp City? It’s the most fascinating, yet terrifying place that has ever existed. At least for a human. It’s a place that shouldn’t exist, a magical otherworld that, impossibly, sits directly on top of modern day Washington, D.C. Washington, V.C., they call it. It’s a world of perpetual twilight where vampires can live openly and safely, free from the deadly sunlight, free to hunt and feed on the humans brought in for their sustenance and pleasure. It’s a vampire utopia-turned-death trap, created it in 1870 by a diabolical sorcerer at the vampires’ request.
I’ve been to Vamp City more than once, now, and swore I’d never go back. Unfortunately, circumstances keep thwarting me. My stomach cramps at the thought of returning. The place is shocking, yet amazing, in so many ways—the crumbling ruins of the White House, half sunken in the swamp that’s reclaimed that part of D.C., the trees that grow twisted and dead, the time capsule of the Civil War Nation’s Capital left to rot for one hundred forty years, dotted with vampire castles and strongholds. All in the dark. Forever in the dark.
And the people…vampires and werewolves, and humans turned immortal from simply staying too long within the embrace of V.C.’s magic. Most within Vamp City live as they did in the nineteenth century, wearing period clothing, driving horses and carriages. But some have kept up with the changes and live at least part time in the real world. The vampire Arturo, my savior, betrayer, then savior again, has brought in aspects of the modern world—his yellow Jeep Wrangler, a generator for his home, and modern appliances for his kitchen. It’s the oddest mix of new and old, at times.
Some structures have been built since the creation of the doppelganger city—castles and strongholds for the vampire masters, an arena for the Games. Most vampires live within the strongholds of their kovenas, or covens, but some have taken over the residences duplicated at the time of V.C.’s creation, complete with furnishings, artwork, etc.
Vamp City is a dangerous place for a human. But I’d be lying if I denied a dark fascination with the place. It’s dying, did I mention that? The magic is disintegrating one errant sunbeam at a time. And the vampires now trapped within are going to die with it unless a sorcerer is found to renew the magic.
Or a sorceress.
Arturo tells me I’m that sorceress.
Maybe he’s right. Maybe I can save him, save them all.
I can’t decide if I should.
