Undead (Hardcover)

Fresh meat! From a hospital of horrors to a runaway zombie train, it’s an all-new onslaught of the slavering undead in the sequel to Kirsty McKay’s killer debut!

Just when you think you’re out…it’s the morning after the night of the return of the living dead. Or something like that. After running/bus-driving/snowboarding for her life alongside rebel Smitty, geeky Pete, and popular Alice, Bobby thought she’d found the antidote to the Carrot Man Veggie Juice that had turned the rest of their classmates into zombies. When Smitty (mmm…nom, nom) got chomped, Bobby pumped a syringe full of it into him herself.

But now Bobby’s a prisoner in some hospital of horrors, with no clue how she got there. And Smitty is missing. What if he isn’t cured after all? Bobby knows she’s got to find him, even if it means facing Scotland’s hungry hordes — plus Alice’s buckets of snark — again. And this time, zombies aren’t the only evil stressing her out. The brain-dead are bad enough, but how can Bobby stop the big pharma business behind the epidemic? Especially when her own mom works for the company?

Chris Says

This cover is spectacularly fun. So much so that once I’m done with my cover art coverage I’m off to find the first book in the series.

Kristina Says

Looks fun. Is she going to be Buffy with a chainsaw? I love the fluffy boots!

Jennifer Says

What’s not to like about a bloody chainsaw and the “fluffy” boots paired with the cheerledger costume looks like this would be a bloody hoot.

I don’t personally like it, but this is a perfect cover for the market they’re going for.

These covers are so very girly and sparkly. They know their audience! I like the spark at the end of “Back”.

I love the blue and the font but it’s boring on cheesy.

The sisters have been manipulated and controlled by the Keane Foundation for years, trapped in a never ending battle for survival. Now they have found allies who can help them truly escape. After faking her own death, Annie has joined a group that is plotting to destroy the Foundation. And Fia is working with James Keane to bring his father down from the inside.

But Annie’s visions of the future can’t show her who to trust in the present. And though James is Fia’s first love, Fia knows he’s hiding something. The sisters can rely only on each other – but that may not be enough to save them.

“I love how well this cover goes with Mind Games, and I extra especially love the background images of this one. One in particular is crucial to the plotline, which delights me to no end. My cover designer, Michelle Taormina, is incredibly talented and does such a phenomenal job of representing my stories in drop dead gorgeous covers!” – Kiersten White

Chris Says

I didn’t find anything wrong with the font and that’s usually one of the first things to bug me. I really like melding of the face and the images underneath it.

Kristina Says

I like the images under her face. It kind of reflects the plot description…The “Lies” part of the title bothers me though. I think its an odd placement and I enjoy symmetry in titles. This is not symmetrical!

Jennifer Says

Eyes and lips pop with color but I agree the font is a little off.

Never, Kentucky is not your average scenic small town. It is a crossways, a place where the dead and the living can find no peace. Not that Forest, an 18-year-old foster kid who works the graveyard shift at Lincoln Hospital, knew this when she applied for the job. Lincoln is a huge state mental institution, a good place for Forest to make some money to pay for college. But along with hundreds of very unstable patients, it also has underground tunnels, bell towers that ring unexpectedly, and a closet that holds more than just donated clothing….When the dead husband of one of Forest’s patients makes an appearance late one night, seemingly accompanied by an agent of the Devil, Forest loses all sense of reality and all sense of time. Terrified, she knows she has a part to play, and when she does so, she finds a heritage that she never expected.

With her deep knowledge of mental illness and mental institutions, Susan Vaught brings readers a fascinating and completely creepy new book intertwining the stories of three young people who find themselves haunted beyond imagining in the depths of Lincoln Hospital.

Chris Says

Kristina nailed it when she said the ghost girl is too close to the foreground. Move her further back and this would have been a great cover.

Kristina Says

It sort of gives off the creepy asylum vibe but its ruined by the blurry ghost girl. She’s too close to the foreground and just too blurry that it kills the creepy vibe.

Jennifer Says

Washed out and flat looking.

Elemental (Elemental, #1)

In this sequel to the dystopian fantasy-adventure ELEMENTAL, which James Dashner called “fantastic,” the stakes are life-or-death and nothing is as it appears to be.

Thomas and his friends have rescued the Guardians and commandeered the pirates’ ship, but the pirates still hold fast to Roanoke Island. Using his newly discovered element, Thomas hears a radio message calling for refugees to head to Fort Sumter. They sail south, but quickly discover that their elements wane as they leave Roanoke behind. There is something sinister going on in the refugee colony too. From the perilous food-gathering squads, to the constant threat of rat infestation, to dangerous secrets, Thomas and his colonists begin to realize that this promising new world may be even more terrifying than the one they left behind.

Fans of The Maze Runner and Ship Breaker will love the fast pace, high stakes, and touches of romance in this thrilling novel by an award-winning author.

Chris Says

They certainly nailed the fire part, but I feel it went a little overboard. All that orange and red makes the title and everything else hard to read.

Kristina Says

I like the firery globe(?) thing. The cover looks very dystopian with the desolate landscape.

Jennifer Says

The cheesy group silhouette killed this cover for me.

Chris Says

Love how the hair stands out against the starkness of the rest of the cover. Wish they had moved the title down a bit though. It feels a little blurred out where they have it now.

Kristina Says

I am loving those tights and boots but the red hair is not working for me. Probably a different shade would be better but I do love the color scheme.

Jennifer Says

With mono colored covers a shock of a bright color usually grabs me and that pink/purple hair did it for me.

I wanted to give this a thumbs down because the cover implies werewolves (boo!), but it really is an excellent cover for what the book is.

Kristina Says

They sure do love showing off that model’s middrift. This is a solid looking urban fantasy cover and is it me or do her fingers look claw like.

Jennifer Says

Underemployed by day. Undead by night.

Underachieving film theory graduate and vampire Fortitude Scott may be waiting tables at a snooty restaurant run by a tyrannical chef who hates him, but the other parts of his life finally seem to be stabilizing. He’s learning how to rule the Scott family territory, hanging out more with his shapeshifting friend Suzume Hollis, and has actually found a decent roommate for once.

Until he finds his roommate’s dead body.

The Scott family cover-up machine swings into gear, but Fort is the only person trying to figure out who (or what) actually killed his friend. His hunt for a murderer leads to a creature that scares even his sociopathic family, and puts them all in deadly peril.

Keeping secrets, killing monsters, and still having to make it to work on time? Sometimes being a vampire really sucks.

“When I saw the cover my first thought was that Fort had leveled up in attractiveness! (he went from Fortitude the Grey to Fortitude the White!) But I do love the cover – particularly the way that the artist used the background V to tie the two books together. And the architectural interest behind the model. Oh, and the gun – that’s exactly how I was picturing it. Okay, I just love the cover.” – M. L. Brennan

Chris Says

The covers for this series suck. A lot. They’re boring as all get out. That’s especially sad since this is a tremendous series.

Kristina Says

While I will always applaud sensible clothes and just plain clothes on a model this is kind of boring. He looks like he’s just taking a stroll with his gun.

Jennifer Says

The V in the background is why I’m giving this cover the middle. My interest is peaked by it alone.

Yawn. This cover is so boring I can’t even work up my usual insults about the guy with no shirt.

Kristina Says

Boring and he doesn’t even have the decency to have a bad tribal tattoo. Two thumbs down for making me miss the tribal tattoos! Also the lens flare is not helping.

This would have been a thumbs up if it had focused more on the cool lightning going on and less on the cover model.

Kristina Says

It looks very witchy with the lightning inside the house. I like the Victorian style dress as well.

Jennifer Says

Too many elements going on for my taste. I’m not sure if this is a historical, steampunk, or mystery novel. It looks like Clue on acid.

This is geting a middle because I inititally thought the arm on the left side of the cover was a leg with an oddly deformed foot. I spent a good thirty seconds writing a witty comment about said foot. Then I realized it was an arm. Petty? Sure.

Kristina Says

There are a lot of neat little details in this cover. And while those are oddly placed tattoos at least they are interesting to look at. That red moon is awesome!

Jennifer Says

This cover sums up Terrible. Gritty with a noir feel to it. Very 50s style like his choice in car, music & hair style.

Hey, look, it’s your stereotypical werewolf with stupid tribal tattoos!

Kristina Says

And back to the tribal tattoos though I do like how it looks going down his back. See I can say nice things about tattoos. And that wolf running with his tongue wagging is adorable.

Jennifer Says

One of the better covers in this series. I like that we can’t see the dude’s face but the wolf looks more like a dog with the tongue hanging out than a wolf.

Unlike with Jennifer this cover is getting an up vote from me because of its cheesiness. I mean, c’mon, mechanical octupus! That’s freaking awesome.

This may be a case where it would have helped to have read the series, but since I haven’t I have no idea what a swan has to do with burning. Because of that this cover does nothing but leave me befuddled.

Kristina Says

I like the paper crane but it doesn’t make sense. Are we going to burn the paper crane?

Jennifer Says

Blah. Cover makes me think the book is about Origami or napkin folding.

Addie hardly recognizes her life since her parents divorced. Her boyfriend used her. Her best friend betrayed her. She can’t believe this is the future she chose. On top of that, her ability is acting up. She’s always been able to Search the future when presented with a choice. Now she can manipulate and slow down time, too . . . but not without a price.

When Addie’s dad invites her to spend her winter break with him, she jumps at the chance to escape into the Norm world of Dallas, Texas. There she meets the handsome and achingly familiar Trevor. He’s a virtual stranger to her, so why does her heart do a funny flip every time she sees him? But after witnessing secrets that were supposed to stay hidden, Trevor quickly seems more suspicious of Addie than interested in her. And she has an inexplicable desire to change that.

Meanwhile, her best friend, Laila, has a secret of her own: she can restore Addie’s memories . . . once she learns how. But there are powerful people who don’t want to see this happen. Desperate, Laila tries to manipulate Connor, a brooding bad boy from school—but he seems to be the only boy in the Compound immune to her charms. And the only one who can help her.

As Addie and Laila frantically attempt to retrieve the lost memories, Addie must piece together a world she thought she knew before she loses the love she nearly forgot . . . and a future that could change everything.

Eh. It’s not great, but it isn’t horrible. This cover could be the poster child for the middle grade.

Kristina Says

Meh. Not a fan of the split screen covers in general.

Jennifer Says

I can’t put my finger on it but I just don’t like this one.

The only thing that could make this cover better would be if it, too, had a mechanical octopus on it.

Kristina Says

I like the steampunk heart.

Jennifer Says

My first thought was WTF?! But once I looked again the steampunk heart is kind of cool.

Why would an angel wear leather pants?

Her sword matches her top! I like this action pose though she does need to be careful about having a blade against her neck.

The Heists were only the beginning.

Gray Weathersby escaped from the primitive town of Claysoot expecting to find answers, but what he discovered shook him to the core: A ruthless dictator with absolute power. An army of young soldiers blinded by lies. And a growing rebellion determined to fight back.

Now Gray has joined a team of rebels on a harsh, icy journey in search of allies who can help them set things right. But in a world built on lies, Gray must constantly question whether any ally—or enemy—is truly what they seem…

“I didn’t think it was possible to love it more than TAKEN’s artwork, but I just might. The winter landscape. The icy reflection. The ridiculously stunning green to gold gradient. And the models! They feel even more like my characters to me this time around. It all fits the mood and tone of FROZEN so well, and I couldn’t be happier.” – Erin Bowman

Chris Says

It definitely fits with the aesthetic of the first book’s cover. Would have worked a lot better without the two people on it though.

Kristina Says

The O not being in line with the rest of the title bothers me but the cover does look pretty interesting. I want to know what is up with the giant globe thing.

Jennifer Says

This cover is just weird enough to make me read the summary to see what the story is about.

The Dirty Streets of Heaven...

I’ve been told to go to Hell more times than I can count. But this time I’m actually going.

My name’s Bobby Dollar, sometimes known as Doloriel, and of course, Hell isn’t a great place for someone like me – I’m an angel. They don’t like my kind down there, not even the slightly fallen variety. But they have my girlfriend, who happens to be a beautiful demon named Casimira, Countess of Cold Hands. Why does an angel have a demon girlfriend? Well, certainly not because it helps my career.

She’s being held hostage by one of the nastiest, most powerful demons in all of the netherworld – Eligor, Grand Duke of Hell. He already hates me, and he’d like nothing better than to get his hands on me and rip my immortal soul right out of my borrowed but oh-so-mortal body.

But wait, it gets better! Not only do I have to sneak into Hell, make my way across thousands of miles of terror and suffering to reach Pandemonium, capital of the fiery depths, but then I have to steal Caz right out from under Eligor’s burning eyes and smuggle her out again, past demon soldiers, hellhounds, and all the murderous creatures imprisoned there for eternity. And even if I somehow manage to escape Hell, I’m also being stalked by an undead psychopath named Smyler who’s been following me for weeks. Oh, and did I mention that he can’t be killed?

So if I somehow survive Hell, elude the Grand Duke and all his hideous minions and make it back to the real world, I’ll still be the most hunted soul in Creation. But at least I’ll have Caz. Gotta have something to look forward to, right?

So just pour me that damn drink, will you? I’ve got somewhere to go.

My name is Kye Rivers. I am a Deuce Crescent, which means I have magick running through my veins. Even though my family is Deuce, too, I have always felt like an outcast. Why? Because my particular gift revolves around sensuality, which makes my family uncomfortable. I get my validation and satisfaction from helping people with their sexual pathos. The price for my magick is that falling in love interferes with my abilities. Losing my abilities, and my career, isn’t worth getting involved with some guy who will probably break my heart anyway.

When I met the new bartender, a rare Caido who works at the nightclub that serves as my office and second home, I felt an electric draw like never before. Even scarier, Kasabian isn’t like other angel/human Crescents, who are cool and asexual. Kasabian craves emotions…and he craves me. I fear that what’s different in him is dangerous for both of us.

The dude behind her is totally giving off creeper vibes. Maybe that’s what people want in their angel romance novels? I dunno, but this cover sucks.

Kristina Says

Hey lady! There’s some guy creeping up behind you! This cover is kind of plain and the guy just looks out of place and random.

Jennifer Says

Meh. It’s not the best cover but I think what helps it, is the fact that it’s clean and simple. Plus I’m a sucker for purple.

In a stunning new paranormal romance series—even edgier than her bestselling Guardians of Eternity books—New York Times bestselling author Alexandra Ivy lures readers into the dark, seductive world of the Sentinels—humans outcast by their hidden abilities, treading the line between life and death, good and evil, pleasure and pain…

Born In Blood

Sergeant Duncan O’Conner has seen it all before. A beautiful erotic dancer is found murdered in her home—no suspect, no motive. But there’s one clue: she’s missing her heart. It’s enough to make the hard-bitten Kansas City cop enlist the help of a necro—one of the dead-channeling freaks who live in the domed city of nearby Valhalla. It’s a long shot, but desperate crimes call for desperate measures.

Unlike the other “high-bloods” in Valhalla, Callie Brown considers her abilities a gift, not a curse. But when she reads the dancer’s final thoughts, she senses a powerful presence blocking her vision. This is no ordinary homicide. This is the work of a legendary necromancer who controls souls. A ravenous force that will put Callie’s skills to the test, O’Conner’s career at risk, and both their hearts on the line…literally.

Chris Says

Couldn’t they have at least hinted at the paranormal aspect of the story on the cover?

Kristina Says

It’s nicely posed and the appearance of male nipple does usually mean PNR. The placement of the author’s name makes it look like the woman is shirtless at first glance (she’s not).

Jennifer Says

YET ANOTHER cover with Paul Marron. That alone gets an UP from me. The fact that both male and female are in leather pants confused me, it is PNR or UF? We have male nipple so I’m going with PNR.

I like everything about this cover. I’d definitely have to pick up the book to check out if I saw it on the book shelf.

Kristina Says

This is a very stormy cover. Get it cause of the word storm and the wind swooshing all around. *crickets chirp* Anyway, it is a very cool looking cover and that little tornado forming in the corner looked like a tree at first.

I think this one would have been better if the font was smaller and the couple bigger.

Julia, you are such a rock star for taking on this beast of a CAC post. I can’t believe how many covers there were! Loved Stacia Kane’s WRONG WAYS DOWN, and I kind of love ALL THAT GLOWS (It all 70’s glamorous, and the font is stunning). Gotta give the worst of the week to FOUNTAINS OF SECRETS. Wow is that all kinds of awful and it couldn’t look less like the debut if it tried.

So many of these look sooooo good. I wish they would stop putting up the covers so early, those publishers sure know how to drive me into a frenzy of panting, slavering book lust.
